1.) Simple and Does the Job

This caliper works well and the "click" feature takes the guesswork out of the correct pressure to use. The chart that's included with the documentation is possibly too simplified, but there are sufficient online resources for using the calipers to determine body fat. I consider it a good value for the home user.

My first reaction was "This plastic thingy-a-jigamus will accurately measure my body fat?" In a nutshell, the answer is YES. In fact, at work we have a health and fitness coach. She has a two-thousand dollar Tanita bio-electric impedance scale. The difference between her scale and this plastic tool is amazing. The deviation is within 2%. Just practice using it and you will be just fine. When I first used it the average difference between three readings is 2 to 4 mm. Once I got used to it, my readings were consistenly on the money, and I was able to accurately get the same reading even the following day.
Next to a pistol and a rifle (I'm a staunch Second Amendment and US Constitution supporter), I would say this is a must have in every household - especially if you are a bodybuilder, or just want to track your weight (or I should say fat) loss.

Okay. I've been using this thing for over a month now. Just wanted to let you know that I have been consistently losing fat, and that the readings between this tool and the $2000 electric scale is still within 2% deviation. The key is consistency. As long as your readings are consistent, you can be rest assured that you will know whether your body is losing fat, muscle, or both. Again, it's a great tool to have.

Update April 3, 2009
Hello again! It's been over a year. I decided to buy another one because the old one is losing the "click" when I measure. What do you expect? It's plastic, and plastic - just like with any other solid material - will deteriorate in time due to friction. Anyway, I am still giving the accu-measure a 5 star. For the price ($6.95 w/ free shipping as of this writing) you cannot go wrong. In retrospect, I probably should have bought more than 2 while they are still in sale.
3.) Great little device
Reviewed by: C. Martin Mt. Pleasant, SC
Rating:
Considering the price and simplicity of this little tool, I really like it a lot. As other reviewers have said, it does take a little getting used to to ensure repeatability though. Here's why:
These calipers use a clever little "half arm" sticking out from the side to help you to gage how hard to pinch before taking your reading. At the tip off this half arm is a little round tip that, as you pinch the calipers closed, nestles into a little pocket (on the long arm where Accu-Measure is printed). The problem is that you just have to pay careful attention to when that little round tip is fully seated in its pocket and not pinch to squeeze the calipers any more than that.
I consider myself pretty technically inclined and it has taken me a few weeks to get very comfortable and repeatable with squeezing it just right. Now it's no problem at all.
I will say though that an even greater source of variability in measurements (at least for me) is where specifically you measure. There's a little diagram that shows approx where to pinch your gut to measure. I found though that the more I move outward toward my side, the lower the body fat measure. I'm not all that concerned with the specific percentage...I've been using the calipers to mostly gage progress. And I can do this by looking at the millimeters of "pinched fat" and seeing that slowly reduce over time.
You just have to be VERY specific about pinching at EXACTLY the same location and not moving the location around inadvertently. Today I measured 20mm in one location (easily repeated 3 times very accurately) and 1.5 to 2" away (toward my side) measured 14mm (again easily repeated 3 times in a row).
So in short, the calipers are an awesome tool and will read VERY repeatably as long as you pay close attention to what you are doing. I can't vouch for how accurately they translate mm of pinched fat into % body fat. I'd imaging that there are lots of factors beyond the control of these little calipers that affect the accuracy of that correlation. But if all you need to do is track progress, this is a perfect tool for me.

This device is a little piece of plastic that simply gets the job done. After some practice i am getting practically the same results with the three point calculations and the one point calculation with the chart provided with the accumeasure 3000. I am getting the same BF% that my doctor gets, so that means the thing actually works perfectly. I suggest you find the formula for the 3skinfold method as it is more accurate than the one skinfold method witht he chart provided. The device seems cheap and could actually probably be cheaper, but it gets the job done with great accuracy, so I dont see the need to buy any other expensive equipment. This is what you need to track fat loss properly. Fully recommend.

These calipers are an excellent, accurate, low cost, reliable way to keep tabs on your body fat percentage. I strongly recommend calipers such as the Accu-measure 3000 over bio electrical impedance methods of measuring body fat because the readings you get are far more consistent and reliable.
The results you will get from bio electrical impedance methods such as Omron hand held body fat analyzers or Tanita body fat scales will fluctuate enormously based on a number of factors such as room temperature, fluid intake, dehydration, activity levels etc etc etc, making their readings wildly inconsistent. I have had my body fat readings vary between 18 and 14 in one day on an Omron body fat analyzer. Obviously the machine is wrong.
With these Accu-measure calipers, measurement is so easy, just grasp the pinch of skin at the Suprailliac as described in the instructions and close the calipers around it until you hear and feel a slight click which lets you know you have applied the correct amount of pressure to measure the thickness of your skinfold. Do this 3 times, take an average and then using the supplied chart (I got mine laminated so it would keep forever) check your results.
Very easy, much cheaper and far superior to bio electrical impedance body fat measuring devices. Highly recommended. Five stars for sure.

The caliper is *great* and the myotape can be useful, too. Both are easy to use.
Some reviews have said the caliper is too simple to be effective, but they are mistaken. Their problem is not with the caliper, but the way they are using it (see more below). This product is recommended by the pros, and there is no reason to pay any more.
Caliper: It's a little tough to get a consistent reading, but with practice it gets easier. The product has a great "click" feature so you can never push too hard. Do not use the instructions or the chart that comes with the product, however, as it will decrease the accuracy and consistency of your body fat measurements. A much more reliable method is to use the internet (see below).
Myotape: Very easy to use and good compliment to caliper.
How to maximize this product using the internet:
1) EXRX dot net has a page which lists the skinfold sites to measure under /Testing/BodyCompSites.html and a calculator page under /Calculators/BodyComp.html that will give you the appropriate fat %. I use the 3 site method since the 7 site method requires the help of another person, and it's not necessarily that much superior, anyway.
2) gain-weight-muscle-fast dot com /body-tape-measurements.html lists further regions to measure
3) Each time you measure (weekly, monthly, etc), do it the same time of day in the same exact spot. This will help minimize error.
Note, the instructions which come with the caliper do work, it's just that it isn't the best method, which is why some fitness freaks were complaining. Consistency across measurements is the most important thing when measuring body fat, and the suprailiac is terribly tough spot to hit consistently. Veer just a little off and the reading will change. But if you use the other method I listed, these problems will be alleviated. Also, the 3 site method is more accurate, with minimal additional effort.

What I think a lot of people don't realize is that taking body fat measurements with a caliper isn't an exact science by any stretch of the imagination. The more experience a person has at taking them, the more accurate they tend to be, and I was shocked when the booklet that arrived with the caliper gave only one place to take the measurement. I'm a personal trainer and purchased this particular caliper because I had one client that was just adamant we measure her body fat percentage. I rarely do it and even when I do I measure it in four different places at least twice, sometimes three times.
In the end, I knew what I was getting myself into and got the quality of product I expected. I figure that if that caliper with its one recommended site measurement gets you a number within 5% of your actual body fat percentage, you're doing pretty well. If you really want to know what your percentage is, see a professional and do something like hydrostatic underwater weighing.

Works fairly well for an inexpensive plastic tool. I purchased this with skeptisism (could other calipers be $50 or $200 better than this?), so I had myself and two others tested with professional grade calipers by a qualified staff member at my health club. Then at home I re-measured each other using the Accu-Measure Fitness 3000 -- the measurements compared acceptably. The tool's increment lines on the scale are not easy to read when you are pinching skin, but it does work. Taking skinfold measurements is more art than science, so repeat taking every skinfold measurement until you get the same value twice (you cannot be in a hurry when you do this). The body fat chart included with this tool is very poor however. To get a more accurate body fat score, find another formula that require more measurement locations such as the Yuhasz Equation which requires five measures, see [...]. I calculated body fat for all of us using a one-measure, 2 three-measures, and a five-measure test that tested 7 different body locations (including the one at the health club). The results had a *high* degree of variance. The more pinch datapoints taken appears to be a more reasonable body fat score; the down-side though is you will want an electronic calculator for the formula math and need another person to help you take skinfold measures.

Although the calipers are able to read skinfolds to the nearest millimeter, the chart offers only a very loose interpretation of the readings. The body fat percentages listed on the chart would seem accurate enough: 9.9%, 12.4%, 14.7%, etc., but there is no 10% or 12% or 15%. This body fat tester is designed to evaluate your body fat percentage by measuring just one spot (an inch above your Anterior Superior Iliac Spine, or hip "pointer"), with this thickness then being cross-referenced against the included table to arrive at a percentage reading. Actually, two tables are included: one for men and one for women. The tables seem to be created from a cross-section of average men and women. Most likely, if you gain fat like an average man or woman (stomach first for man, hips/butt first for women is my guess) then this would give you a roughly accurate reading. Unfortunately, neither me nor my wife get fat like normal people (nor do we do much else like normal people, for that matter.) Needless to say, I'm a little overweight, yet it told me I was "lean," and my wife is also a little overweight and it told her she was "borderline obese." I haven't had it checked yet, but my guess is that a professional using a more expensive device and several areas of body fat "pinching" would arrive at a much more accurate reading. Hope this helps.

It would have been better if the readout of the measurement locked into place on the scale, so that I could get an accurate reading, and then release it afterwards. The way it currently works is that it releases from the scale when I try to read it after a measurement, due to the change of my hand grip pressure. I would need a second person to read it in place, to get an accurate reading without taking my hand off of the caliper.

The 'clicking' feature didn't really work either. It is an inexpensive item, but the difficulty of using it, getting the exact same location every time, makes it something I won't use again. It isn't worth sending it back.
I found the website another reviewer posted that you could post your measurements on more useful, just using a tape measure, and then it generates an approximate body fat percentage.
If you are disproportionate where you store fat, it is probably more accurate than an impedance device, and there is some use to it for giving you rough information but not for extreme accuracy.

I used this 3 times and got consistent readings (that I thought were a bit low, but maybe they were right as I don't have a true recent measurement to compare against). After the third reading, however, the small tab required much less resistance to click to identify the right measurement and starting giving widely varying measurements.
I shipped back and had no problems returning, so I would shop again from this seller as they stood behind the product. I fault myself partly as this is a very inexpensive caliper and you get what you pay for. I would recommend buying a bit heavier duty one for others.

110.) These are not good calipers
Reviewed by: Aaron Blumenthal California

A fitness manual referred these calipers to me as the cheapest most accurate self-measurement body fat % device out there. The fitness manual has been correct about just about EVERYTHING else except these. I've lost around 6-10 lbs of fat (15 lbs total) and at least one pant size and yet my caliper reading has not changed at all. I do multiple readings just to make sure, with different amounts of skin pinched off, and still don't see any significant change in reading on the calipers. The advertisements for this that it is the ideal way to measure body fat is true for calipers in general, not this one specifically. In general, calipers are almost as accurate as submersion in water (which works because fat floats muscle sinks), but the drawback is that you need to go to a special facility to get the submersion test done. Unlike this calipers which measures only one skin fold on your stomach, other calipers measure skin folds on multiple parts of your body (you usually do 4 different places each time) for their accuracy. In short, I would recommend sucking up your anxiety over letting someone else measure you and get a real set of calipers or you won't be able to tell for sure if you're losing weight from fat or muscle.

I should have known that cheap plastic calipers wouldn't work very well. My main gripe is that you are supposed to squeeze the calipers together until you hear a click. Maybe my unit is defective, but the click is basically silent, and I almost always continue squeezing beyond where I should have stopped. I have resorted to trying to look at the calipers as I squeeze, although this is a little tricky. Tyring to stand up straight, pinch my skin, squeeze the calipers, and try and watch to know when to stop, all at the same time, is a little awkward and overwhelming. Would not recommend.

Reviewed by: Eddie Patin Colorado Springs, Co USA
Rating:
These calipers are not up to any form of reliable measurement, because its premise is far too simple.
The instructions include no equations of any kind, and the pinch is intended only for the abdominal skin-fold. Once you measure the skinfold, you take the result (in millimeters) and compare to a color-coded chart which pairs a man/woman's age and measurement to show the bodyfat percentage within the colored stripes of (ideal, overweight, obese, etc.).
This is too simple for a bodyfat measurement. There was no regard for body weight, height, or other skin-fold areas. It would have been nice if the instructions at least included equations so that I could measure myself more accurately on my own--but, no.
Granted, the "click" feature is pretty cool, and lets you know exactly how much pressure to apply while measuring. However, if you're a trainer or someone seriously trying to lose body fat and measure your progress, you'll need normal calipers with formulas. This is too basic. A toy.
