The Motiva Petite is great! I love the interchangeable bands and the instant heart rate readings. The size is just right for me (I have small wrists). I especially love the calorie countdown.

I LOVE this product--especially because it does NOT require a chest strap. I can take my pulse anytime (I wear it around the house doing chores, up and down the stairs, during my workouts, etc...) and test my heartrate frequently throughout the day. It's also very user friendly!

I recently purchased this MIO watch and I love everything about it. It is very small and cute, which is good because I have quite small wrists. I am easily able to see how many calories I burn during my workout and I love the little book that comes with it that has all the calorie tables. I had used Polar for years, but now that I don't need to wear a chest strap I don't think I will be switching back.

Watch is easy to set up. Gives fairly accurate and easily obtained heart rate reading - with the watch on your wrist just press two buttons on opposite sides of watch with the other hand. Easy to enter your data.
Have not tried to use yet as a calorie counter. I believe it will be awkward as you have to enter your caloric intake and I am not certain how your calories burned are calculated.
Right size for smaller wrist. Good looking. Cleverly designed to easily exchange watch bands, but 2nd band included with watch is very, very bright.
Useful, small book with health and weight-loss advise and lists of the calorie count for many foods included.

Love the watch, and I wear it all the time. During the day when I go for a walk at work, I track my calories burned, and my heart rate to make sure I get it high enough to burn calories efficiently. On weekends, I'm doing walk/run to build up to running, and it has a timer for such.
The watch works great on petite wrists.

I really like this heart rate monitor for its strapless feature. I have an old Acumen Eon Basix Plus before. After 2 years of continuous use, the transmitter strap became irritating to my skin even though I took care to clean it after every use.
And the calorie counting feature is wonderful. The performance bars make it easy to tell how you are doing. It makes calorie so much easier than carrying a little notebook around. When my daily calorie get up to the "red" zone, I know it is time to add some exercise to get it in the "green" zone.
I have gotten a few compliments from friends and co-workers about my "new watch." I used the blue and orange watch band that came with the package. The black and gray watch band is nice too, but I like a little more color.

I love my Motiva Heart Rate Monitor Watch! It's great when I'm working out to be able to see my heart rate each time. That way if I'm in the same point of a workout that I did previously and my heart rate isn't where it was that time then I know that I am not working out as hard as I could and I kick it up a notch. I love that I can track my calories on it too! I haven't used the function for calories consumed because I use a different system for that already, but it's great to be able to see how many calories a specific workout has and also to be able to see at the end of the day how many calories I've burned! The only "con" that I have found with this watch is sometimes it's hard to get a reading on the heart rate and I'll have to do it several times before it works. However, this is usually when my hands are really cold so I think that's the issue. Definitely more pros than cons to this product though!! I don't think you can find a better comparable product for the price. I would recommend it to anyone wanting to lose weight or just get fit.
8.) Heart rate monitor is accurate enough

I owned Polar F11 with the coded chest strap. I bought this watch because I want to use it for my lap swim (I'm not about to dip my $150 watch to the pool). I test the watch heart rate monitor accuracy during my morning walk by wearing my polar on the other hand. (I know it's overkill, but I need to know if the heart rate monitor is accurate). I took 7 reading from the watch, and 5 of them were accurate. They showed my heart rate the same number as my polar watch. If it's off, it would be off by 2-4 beats on the lower side than my Polar. Part of it maybe because my Polar reads my heart rate continuously while my Motiva reads my heart rate at a given moment and it takes time to read it too. The other 2 off reading might be caused by the way I pressed the sensor (I might not pressed it correctly) since it's a little challenging trying to get your heart rate while you are moving and using your left hand (I'm right handed).
On my next walking exercise, I did another test. I took 3 readings and all 3 reading read the same heart rate as my Polar. So overall, I would say the motive watch is accurate enough.
As far as design and construction, I think the watch is stylish enough to wear for daily time keeper, and the watch looks really sturdy and well made. It's also small enough for women to wear.
The only complaint I have is the alert sound (whether is for the exercise timer, alarm or anything that needs alert). The alert sound is way too soft. I barely can hear it. Even, my rebook watch has a louder sound than it. I can even hear my rebook watch alert while swimming and listening to my waterproof MP3. Compare to my Polar, I can set up the alert sound to: loud, soft or silent. With my Motiva, I have to keep checking the watch all the time to see if I have reach my exercise time.
I also took this watch on my swimming laps. The watch works fine, but I haven't have any luck getting my heart rate during my swimming. Usually I got it after I shower and change.

I like the watch and it has great features and looks good too. It was fairly intutive to use it once I went through the instructions a couple of times. The heart rate seems accurate enough but I do find it between 2 and 5 counts off. I think I can live with that.
However, this watch has never beeped, so I'm sending it back for a replacement. I hope the second one beeps. Amazon's return policy is slick and easy, so I'm looking forward to getting the replacement. I can still check my heart rates with this one, so I'll use it until the new one shows up. I just can't use any of the timer features since it doesn't beep. I need the beep because I use the alarm features of my watch when I have to get up early for races.
I received a new watch and it works great. I like the prompt service from Amazon. The beeper is a little quiet for uses like a treadmill or hearing it over traffic noise. I find no problem using it for intensive training, but I admit my intensities are not necessarily as high as some people since I am middle aged.
It fit my wrist well and I have small wrists. I can use it on the third from the end (small size) and it is fine. I especially like the count timers with the multiple options for walk / run or warm up / run.
I highly recommend this watch if you want a heart monitor, watch, timer, alarm... all for a decent price.
10.) I like this watch
Reviewed by: J. Miles NC

This is my first heart rate monitor. I debated between the one with and without the calorie counters and got this one. I find it generally intuitive to use with one review of the directions. For me the only notable issue has been the inability to take a reading while exercising. Much motion affects the ability to read, so you have to be pretty still while you do. This is an issue because the calorie burner uses your heart rate to calculate calories burned in the workout. This is fine for my DVD exercises since there are some breaks that I can measure my heart rate, but for jogging, for example, I had to stop jogging and walk slowly to get a reading. I would not recommend this watch if you want to check your heart rate during exercise without slowing WAY down or stopping. The reading is quick, maybe 6-8 seconds, so you don't have to stop for long. Having to push the bottons for me is not really an issue, I don't mind a small wait. Having to be pretty still is the issue.
I like the net calorie counter. You enter the calories you eat each time, which is easy to do. It calculates how many you burned during exercise and adding the two displays a net calorie intake for the day. This is very helpful if you are trying to manage calories. There is a very small book with directions and a calorie table that is helpful with estimation.
I have only used the timer for exercise. With my old timex
Ironman I would use the timer for all kinds of other things than exercise, but with this timer tied to calories burned, I can't do that. I miss that feature. There is an alarm that would have to be used instead, but alarms need more set up to use and is therefore less desirable.
The watch is fairly tall off the wrist, but the band does fit a small wrist fine. Changing between the two watch bands is easy, but I wish the other color was not such a bright orange which has more limited use than some other color would.
I agree with the comment that the beep is very quiet. If you need to rely on a beep during your exercise, it would not work well. You need to look at the watch to check the status.
Overall I have been happy with the watch and would purchase it again. I can't imagine wanting to wear a chest strap and think that the advantage of no strap outweighs the negatives.
11.) Fits small wrists, works great.
Reviewed by: Work of Life Miami, Florida USA

Granted, I have to wear it on the tightest notch, but it does fit. One star off because the wrist strap is not quite as small as it should be for a "petite" watch. I have checked the accuracy against the heart rate check that my doctor's office does and it was right on both times. It must have "moist" contact with your (inside) wrist as well as the two fingers holding the buttons. If you don't get a reading, just moisten the contacts and try again. Much easier than wearing a chest strap and you can monitor your heart rate anytime!
12.) Easily Scratched

I wanted this watch for over a year before I purchased it. It had all the features I was looking for, including an interval timer, heart rate monitor, etc. While I love the features and the petite size (fits my tiny wrist), you cannot hear the timer chimes if you have music or even if you are out on a busy street.
My biggest complaint is that the "crystal" seems to be thin, cheap plastic, and I scratched the face the first day. Since then it has become heavily scratched, and I don't think I am particulary hard on it. I would not buy another Mio for this reason.

I have to agree to a degree with some of the reviews on here...regarding how long it takes for the watch to give you the reading. It's hard to use the watch when working out in the cold (d/t decrease circulation to your fingers)I haven't tried it riding a bike but I would imagine it would be challenging, however I use it with all the gym equipments you can think of and it works well. If I run indoors or on a warm day, it works well. there's a particular way you have to place the thumb (i think) when obtaining the reading for it to be under 10 seconds. That being said; I like the watch. I find that the heart rate accuracy is spot on...for instance when I take it with the watch and then manually it's right there. I also borrowed a body bugg and wore it to compare it to the mio watch activity throughout one days and it was right there probably 200 calories apart but that may have been me; a whole days can create a lot of discrepancy. I like the watch and I'm sure they'll come out with a better one eventually. Right now though it doesn't have many competitors (in terms of strapless HR monitor) i don't think but if I had to choose between this and the body bugg...I would definitely choose the watch. It's just more natural and functions as a watch.

This product does what it says BUT is misleading when it comes to the heart rate monitor. It does not read it while exercising. You have to do it manually which is a bit of a pain when you're working out. Other than that the product does what it says but I was looking for one that reads your heart rate through out exercising.
15.) Great if it worked consistently

It seems like many reviewers expected the Mio to take a continuous heart rate while the wearer is exercising -- I knew it did not, and I don't mind checking my heart rate periodically. Unfortunately, twice now (the watch is only 2 weeks old) my Mio has provided heart rates LOWER than my resting heart rate, while I was 15-20 minutes into a high intensity workout. Clearly incorrect. Other times, I held the buttons for the heart rate monitor for nearly a minute (while trying to keep up my pace) with no reading at all. Perhaps it's something I'm doing wrong?! If I can figure it out, I'll be very enthusiastic about the Mio -- I love that it can be customized at the beginning with your own weight, resting heart rate, etc., so that the readouts it gives are more reliable than the generic ones that show on the gym machines. Now if only I could get it to work consistently, every time....
16.) un-serious
Reviewed by: A. Reale NYC

Maybe this is ok for calorie counter and nutri system followers but this is not a watch for athletes. Athletes will want to continue to use a strap as this device only indicates your heart rate when you place you opposing hand on the reader nodes. Not practical when swimming biking or even running or anything else. Furthermore it takes several seconds to give you the read out. Maybe this is ok for some but for anyone doing serious heart rate training; don't buy this product.

I bought the Mio Motiva Petite watch for myself for my birthday. Wanted to get serious about walking & fitness. I love the way the watch looks & since I'm petite, it was a perfect size for my wrist. I had no problem setting up the watch, the instructions weren't too bad. However, when I started to use it while walking on the treadmill - forget it. It took many tries to finally get a reading. I tried holding my arm still on the treadmill bar, but no luck, so I finally had to stop walking to get a reading. Not what I expected. I didn't give up yet, figured maybe it was operator error. I tried again the next day while walking outside. Again, it was hit or miss getting a reading. I seemed to have a little better luck when recording the high & low heart rates for the RCVRY test. But the last straw happened when I took my heart rate before starting a walk - it was 78. Then I walked for 5 minutes at a quick pace and took another reading (while still walking) & the result... 57 !!! 57 ??? how can that be, since my resting heart rate was 65. I just walked 5 minutes and my rate went from 78 to 57. That was it, time to send it back & search again for another brand. I really wanted to keep this watch, it looks so nice & I was getting used to the settings, etc. but I needed it to be accurate & this didn't do it for me. I should've paid attention to the other posts that mentioned similar accuracy problems.
18.) Very disappointing

I purchased this watch because I am training for a marathon and the chest strap from my other HRM was starting to bother me on longer runs. I was excited to try a watch that does not need a chest strap. However, this watch is a huge disappointment. I can only get it to even read a rate on me about 10% of the time when I'm running. It just keeps saying "Testing" but nothing ever happens. Otherwise I have to completely stop to do it and even then I only get a reading about 50% of the time. And the readings are crazy, once even telling me my HR was 35 during a run. The calculation of calories burned also seems to be way off. This watch told me I burned 952 calories during a 7 mile run, that's crazy. I know that is not correct. Very disappointed in this product. Please consider buying something else.

Two problems with this watch/heart rate monitor....Way too bulky for my petite wrist as I was hoping to wear it all day. Also, I thought it would keep a constant HR to view and instead it still required that I push and hold buttons to obtain HR making it cumbersome to use during high intensity exercise. Ended up returning product.

I've almost always misstrusted the information given about electronics and, trying to make these monitors work for my wife and I is not worth the time anymore. I just couldn't resist getting a strapless heart monitor.Reading the little blurb about what the monitor could do was missleading. The first thing I found out, after buying 2 (one for me and one for my wife) is that it doesn't have a continuous heart rate readout. Just try positioning yourself on your bike as you role down highly technical single track and take your heart rate. Not a good idea. Second, neither my wife or I have been able to get the weight management modes to work. Third, you can never be sure if the exercise timer stays on when you activate it. For me, half the time, it would be off when I tried to get my readout. Anybody want to buy some slightly used heart rate monitors....they're cheap.

About Mio
The story of Mio began in 1999 when it was created by entrepreneur and mother of three, Liz Dickinson. Like many of us, Liz balances family and career, leaving little time for fitness. After several unsuccessful attempts to achieve her fitness goals and shed the pregnancy weight-gain of her third child, Liz turned to a personal trainer for advice. While working with a trainer, Liz realized the key to getting in shape and staying in shape is to practice smart eating habits, monitoring calorie intake, and using a heart rate monitor to ensure that she exercises at the right level. Liz realized there wasn't a product available on the market that would easily help her follow her trainer’s advice.
Liz didn't have time to read labels and carry a calorie journal in her purse, nor did she have much patience for the uncomfortable chest strap she had to wear to get her heart rate. She knew there had to be a better way, so Liz used her technology and marketing savvy to create Mio, the world’s first heart rate monitor to work without a chest strap. And, it didn't stop with just heart rate, as Mio also has a patented calorie management system that offers a straightforward approach to managing your diet. With the help of Mio and a balanced diet, Liz was able to shed those unwanted pounds and gain the benefits that come with improved fitness: more energy, more vitality, and less stress, and help many others do the same with the creation of Mio's products.
