One big improvement from the original transmitters (T31 or T61 transmitters) is that with this model (the Wearlink) you only have to buy a new battery and replace it once they ran out and your transmitter is ready to use again. With the original ones you have to buy a new transmitter every time the battery dies, since the whole structure is sealed. So if your Polar wrist watch came with the T31 or T61, wait until the battery is finished and buy the Wearlink transmitter instead, you will save a lot of money over the years (compare the 39.95 US$ that the T31 or T61 cost vs the cost of a replacement battery).
The other big advantage is that the Wearlink transmitter is more confortable to wear, since it adapts better to the shape of your body since even the electrodes are flexible and are embedded in the fabric. Being flexible and all makes it easier to storage it your pocket when your finish training or if you are traveling.
In summary a great product for your Polar HRM, and a smart improvement if it is time to replace your old transmitter. Don't buy another T31 or T61, buy this one instead.
I run with my Polar six days a week, and probably train about ten hour a week with it. I used to have the T31 with my first Polar (the M61) so I can tell you first hand the Wearlink is far better. In summary more confortable, easier to wash, and a money saver. I was more than happy to trow the old one away after I bought this one.

I bought this belt to replace the one that came with my Polar watch (720i) since the one the watch came with did not have a replaceable battery (you are supposed to send the belt in and get a replacement belt for about $10 less than this belt - but you still can't replace the battery). So I figured I can buy this one and by the simple act of replacing the battery I can save myself a decent amount of money.
This band is very comfortable (I am a big guy at 6'4" with a large build and it fits me no problem). it is more comfortable than my original one and works great. And when I need to replace the battery, the belt came with several replacement battery gaskets so that I can ensure each replacement remains water tight.

I've used both the older plastic and the newer fabric Wearlink transmitters. I much prefer the new Wearlink model. I've used my Wearlink transmitter for 1.5 years with absolutely no problems. I wash the fabric strap in the washing machine (delicate cycle) occassionally after removing the hard plastic transmitter. I quickly rinse the transmitter in cool running water to remove accumulated salt build up. I still haven't had to change the battery out even after 200+ hours of triathlon training and exercise bootcamps. However, I pulled the battery out just to see how easy it was. Very easy! I use my transmitter interchangeably between 2 different models of polar heart rate monitors. My strap has never torn or seemed difficult to remove. I can say from first hand experience that the soft Wearlink transmitter is much more comfortable when wearing an underwire sports bra. The hard plastic model frequently skipped and lost contact when paired with my underwire sports bra. I've never had that issue with the soft Wearlink model. The Wearlink also works well in water. Chlorine doesn't seem to bother it but I rinse the strap and transmitter in cool running water after each swim.

Although this transmitter may look like it will break, I can attest that it's extremely durable. You don't need to worry about breaking this thing, but don't forget to pack it when you check out !

I had a hard time finding confirmation that this Polar monitor, being coded, would work with Precor treadmills, but it seemed that it would. Now that I have purchased it, I can verify that this works just fine on several Precor models at my health club (specifically, I have tested it on the 954i and the 956i). You walk up to the treadmill, and it immediately starts tracking your heartrate. I have not tested it with "interference" as others at the club don't seem to use HR monitors, but it really is great to have the instant and constant feedback during workouts.
I have no complaints about the requirements on this monitor - wetting down the electrodes and rinsing the strap after usage is just not that big a deal. I'm a pretty large person and the XX-L size promise of the description is real, and the monitor is quite easy to adjust and comfortable to wear.
The monitor itself snaps into the strap firmly, but it releases easily enough with one hand tugging on the monitor.
I am rating it 5 stars because, well, it just works; it's comfortable to wear, and I really don't have anything negative to say about its design or operation.

I can reach and maintain my target HR with ease. In fact, when I do decide to do some actual roadwork, I'll pick up the watch/receiver from Polar.

Rating:
I've been using heart rate monitors with chest straps for at least 15 years, and the Polar WearLink+ is the most comfortable one I've used.
This chest strap eliminates the most common problem I've had with other chest straps; inconsistent or inaccurate readings because of poor skin-to-monitor contact. With other chest straps, even with Buh Bump or ultrasound gel, I've had problems. With the WearLink+, you just wet the sensors and put it on, and it simply works.
The actual transmitter unit snaps onto the chest strap via a couple of "button snaps". This means that before you start your workout, or after you're finished, you can keep the transmitter disconnected (I keep mine in a cycling jersey pocket) and not waste the battery.
The strap instructions suggest a hot-water hand washing of the strap at least every five uses. I rinse mine after each workout in water that's too hot to put my hand in, and have never had a problem with salt build-up or odor.
It's the best all around chest strap for heart rate monitors I've used.

I managed to lose the strap that came with my heart rate monitor and was very happy to see that I could buy a transmitter belt here and not have to to buy a new monitor and belt. I have been using my RS200 for a couple of years ( and really like it). I wasn't sure from the Polar site or reviews here (though maybe I didn't look closely enough) what it would take for the the transmitter to "talk with" the monitor. The good news is that there was no issue at all -- the monitor basically picks up the signal directly from the belt (probably helps to hold the watch near the belt).
The belt is comfortable and fits well (I have a 42" chest) and being able to easily replace the battery (versus sealed batteries in older belts) is a plus.
Highly recommended.

The picture on this product indicates the strap is the old model, where the band's ends clip into the transmitter module. I'd had problems with the old design due to sweat corroding the contacts and giving me intermittent pickup - I used to have to buy a new band every 6 months or so.
When I got the new set, I found that they had improved the design - the band now fastens at the side, with the transmitter still in the center but with rubber cups around the contacts to help prevent corrosion. Not had any issue so far, just reliable operation. Very happy with the new design.

I have had a polar cycle computer S720i for 2.5 years and now the wearlink has gotten old and rarely transmits to the computer. So I sent it into a Polar authorized repair shop and they charged me a lot of money and it helped for a few months, but then it went back to only working when dunking in water and then only occationally. So I replaced the battery and still no better, then I was going to do a big ride and wanted to make sure that I captured all of my stats, so I decided to get this new one. Wow, what a difference. I just lick it a little and it works great and syncs with my cycle computer watch instantly, unlike my old one which took 30 seconds to connect if it ever did.
What I am trying to say is that these basically last about 2 - 2.5 years and then just buy another one of these and you will be happy. But make sure that you clean it regularly as instructed in the manual.

I got the Medium-XXLarge size, and it fits me well. But I'm a guy 5 foot 8 and 180 pounds. So I'm not skinny, and I'm not fat. I'm kind of medium build. And the belt doesn't have much more adjustment available to get larger. So if you are large, you might want to see if there is a larger size available.

I was so happy that this strap and transmitter had the strap connecting on the side instead of the snap in using the transmitter, since the tabs on the transmitter broke within a week of original purchase, and that was just taking it on and off for normal use.
The previous one still worked even though the little tab pieces broke but I had intermittent problems and I feel it was caused by the possible unsecure connection with those broken tab parts missing.
I was also not sure if it would work with my rs400 since it had the new technology but it worked, put it on and first try it quickly got my heart rate. It was a relief cause I was worried it could have been the watch not the strap that was failing to receive proper HR readings.

I bought this transmitter because I did not know that the Polar Heart Rate Monitors came with a transmitter included in the box. I could not find anything that specified this, so I ended up purchasing an extra transmitter.
That being said, this transmitter is super comfortable. The rubber model that comes with the heart rate monitors does not have any comfort issues over this one. The electrodes are sewn inside the fabric of the strap, and they are soft. The only hard piece on this is the plastic transmitter part that is not that big in the front. If you are doing something that involves a lot of body motion, like aerobics, tennis, dance or lifting weights, this fabric model is a better alternative to the rubber model. This fabric strap transmitter might also be a better option for women, who may already be dealing with an underwire bra at the gym.
As far as functionality goes, you won't really need a coded transmitter unless you are using the HRM in a crowded environment where EVERYONE is using monitors. Like at my gym, where the personal trainers sell the Polar brand of HRMs, hold weekly training classes about them, and encourage everyone to buy them. If you don't find yourself in this type of environment, but you find the regular transmitter to be uncomfortable, than this is for you. If the regular transmitter does not hurt you, then you don't really need this.
One problem with this transmitter is the clip mechanism that you use to snap it shut. The little plastic points that clip in look like something I am going to break in about a month. Everytime I snap it open or closed I feel like I'm breaking it.

I purchased this product to replace the original transmitter that came with my Polar F6. The biggest improvement is that original transmitter didn't come with replaceable batteries and this one does. Unfortunately, I didn't have my original long enough (lost in the locker room) to verify that the batteries do last two years so I am not sure how big of an issue this really is. I also question any electronics purchase that is expected to last longer than two years these days...
This version does come with a method for user replacing the batteries but at two costs: 1) It is not as comfortable to wear as the original strap. The new strap just seems to sit a little funny and rubs my skin the wrong way. 2) You must wet the strap with water, not just spit. The older version you could moisten the leads with a little bit of saliva on your fingers. The new strap you must really use water.
Many people have complained about the small size of the strap. Yes, the strap is pretty small. I typically wear a 48 or 50 jacket and the XX-Large strap barely fits me. I hope that as I continue to exercise this will be less of an issue so maybe this is good motivation ;-)
All in all, it is a good product as are all the Polar products I have used. I wish it was more streamlined like the original strap, but it is a fine replacement especially if you are concerned about owning for many years of hard use.

The battery can be replaced.
The strap material is soft.
Cons: The transmitter itself is big and chunky and will show under your workout top if it's even remotely form-fitting.
It seems very "fussy" - the instructions for washing it after every use and making sure that you store the transmitter away from the strap...

While I have been very pleased with the performance of this transmitter while the battery functioned, I cannot say the same when the battery began to wear out. I purchased new batteries and brought them home to attempt to change them. Unfortunately, I was not able to take off the cover. In the process of attempting to get the arrow on the cover to move from close to open a number of times, the inset has now been damaged and cannot be opened. After contacting Polar, my options were to send it in for repair, at least a three week process (too long in my opinion) or have them send me a new cover and have me go to a watch repair place and hope they can get it off. Either way, I am out almost as much money as I would have been just to buy a new transmitter, which I wish I had done.
As long as you are comfortable with replacing this transmitter at a cost of $54.95 every 18 to 24 months, this is a good deal. But if you plan on keeping it for the long run, you might want to find another transmitter to purchase.

I have read other reviews on this product and the big criticism is that after the initial battery needs replacement they don't last as long as the original.

So I had the old Polar transmitter; the one where you couldn't change the battery and other than the fact that you couldn't change the battery, it was great. I would wear it and not even know it was there. When the battery died I debated whether to just replace it with the same thing or to go with this newer version that lets you change the battery when it dies. Seemed like the latter of the two was a better choice economically over the long run so I went with it. It got here super fast and it works great but it is not comfortable. I find myself reaching up my shirt to adjust it at least twice every time I wear it. I have changed the band length to see if it was that simple of an issue but nothing seems to make it comfy. Having it is better than not having one at all but overall the comfort level is just not that great. I wish Polar would come up with one that is like the T-31(I think that is the name of the old one) but with the option of battery replacement! My two cents.

Since than I have had so many problems with the transmitter stopping in the middle of a run. I have replaced the battery so many times that the cover now is stripped which means I have to replace the entire sensor since Polar does not just sell a cover. I would probably not buy another Polar. I am disappointed in their lack of reasonable support of the product. I thought having a replacement battery was a positive however the design flaws make the device unstable after the cover and battery is removed.

I replaced the battery. Still no help. I feel this strap is way too expensive to give only one year of usage!

I purchased the Polar Heart Rate Monitor, and it and the included Wearlink strap are a nice combination when they're working. But at about 11 months I started getting eratic readings. Not the battery, not the strap, it's the transmitter. I've read other reviewers who have experienced the same problem. Polar has always had excellent products but this is a very short life span for the expense of this monitor and strap. Polar recommends disconnecting both sides from the strap connectors each time the transmitter and strap are removed. This didn't help my situation.
I'll try the newer W.I.N.D. transmitter and strap and hope it lasts longer than the original strap.
64.) Bad product overall

The battery on my T-31 Coded chest transmitter went out, so I decided to spring for the Wearlink. Even though it was more expensive, I figured I could save money in the long run by being able to swap out the batteries myself. Instead of just replacing the entire chest transmitter (T-31),I figured this would be a nice advantage, and a cost cutting measure.
I had read the reviews on Amazon.com about this product, and noticed that many people were grousing about the readings being unreliable. I decided to purchase the product anyways, and make up my own mind.
For starters, the chest strap is very nice. It fit comfortably and snugly, and didn't slide up and down my sweaty chest as the T-31 had before. Even though my T-31 never lost contact when I was wearing it, it was always in the back of my mind. I was constantly having to readjust it, while in the midst of a workout. The Wearlink posed no such problem.
Secondly, I never had to avail myself to the option of being able to change out the batteries. I owned the Wearlink for just under a week, but used it heavily during that time. I never removed the back cover from the unit, so I can't speak as to the degree of difficulty, etc, that is involved in undergoing such a task.
Once I employed the chest transmitter during the workouts, I became dismayed very quickly. The inaugural workout went off without a hitch, and was about what I expected. However, with each subsquent workout the readings became more erratic and unreliable. By the time that final day rolled around, I was half tempted to throw the Wearlink on the ground and stomp on it LOL. Fortunately for me, cooler heads prevailed in this situation.
I called up the company that sold it to me and insisted that they send me a T-31 Coded unit. They did, and I sent back the Wearlink. Since that time, I have had nary any problem with accuracy and reliabilty. The T-31 Coded chest transmitter has worked like a charm, and is the best model that Polar has to date IMO.
The old adage, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it," applies here. I had always been happy with the performance of the T-31, but thought I would try something new. However, the Wearlink has sent me scrambling back to the original, the T-31.
If I was in the market for a chest trasmitter again, knowing what I know now, I would just plunk down the $35-$45 to replace the T-31 each time the batteries went out. You may spend more money, but the aggravation it would save you would be well worth the expense.

I bought a new F7 that came with this strap - however, I am very disappointed with the sheer bulk of the chest strap. Its pretty obvious that Polar will be improving this in coming years, as the mechanism itself is far too bulky. Poor, clumsy design.

This transmitter is very comfortable. However the main problem arises when, just about over a year from the date of purchase, one has to change the battery of the unit. The lid does not open! One can easily turn the lid to the full "open" position; but, doing so does not produce the desired result at all. The lid remains locked and does not pop out! Good luck to anybody buying this unit thinking that he/she will be able to change the battery when it goes dead!
The way the strap is connected to the transmitter is also poorly designed. Disconnecting the strap from the transmitter requires a lot of care so that breakage of the locking mechanism does not happen.

The transmitter works only sometimes. I have followed all the tips, including soaking the electrodes each time (very inconvenient - especially in cold weather), rinsing after each use, washing (in washing pouch) every 3 weeks, disconnecting the strap after each use, tightening the belt until it is uncomfortable, replacing the battery, etc. It worked well for several months without these steps, but Polar insists that the user follow these steps, and it did start working again for a few months. I sent it in for warranty but the customer-service person warned me that they may return it unrepaired if they cannot find anything wrong with it. I wish the old T31 would work with the CS600. I would rate the wearlink one star even if it worked because following the instructions for use is a giant step backwards. I have owned Polar monitors for 15 years and never had to do anything but wet the transmitter with a little saliva. I love the CS600 except for the transmitter. I would gladly buy another transmitter but this is the only one that "works". Sometimes.
Mar-2009 update: Polar replaced the elastic strap under warranty and said it was worn out. It took so long to get it replaced that I plan on purchasing a spare from Amazon ($17.95) so that I am not without my monitor for several weeks the next time it "wears out". I believe that we have to endure the extra bulk of this transmitter so that the battery can be replaceable. I'm not sure I understand the logic if the battery outlasts the strap.Polar WearLink Replacement Strap - Size M-XXL(27''-54'' Chest) New Design

My experience with this transmitter and the FT80. I have used Polar monitors for years and I can't tell you how disappointed I was when the first "improved" transmitter stopped working. It worked fine for about 10 weeks. Then I started getting readings of 208 before even warming up. I would mess around with the belt and transmitter over and over to make it work - and it would sometimes for about 5 minutes - then back to crazy readings. I gave them the benefit of the doubt, replaced a 10 week old battery - same results. So I bought another transmitter here on Amazon only to have it do exactly the same thing after only 2 weeks. The product is bad because of the transmitter and you cannot use the older models with it so I am back to using my Polar F6 which has been bulletproof (and costs 1/4th as much). Polar - you really need to fix the transmitter problem on the new watches and provide us an alternative to the one flawed transmitter you offer.

Recently I noticed my old Wearlink transmitter and went on Polar's website and saw that they offer a replacement battery and cover but there was no place to actually purchase this on their website. I emailed them to purchase this replacement battery and and cover (I mostly wanted the cover because my was ruined by trying to remove it to see what kind of battery was required)and they refused saying that I must send my Wearlink in for repair. The cost of doing this is excessive and I think that if a person wants to try replacing the battery and cover themself they should be allowed to try before being charged excessive fees for a battery and having to pay shipping for a service that may not be required.

Electronics on my 31 worked extremely well.
After 20-30 running sessions, the 31 scrapes large sores into the skin on my chest despite using it in the way Polar describes. This has been the case each spring for the last 3 years when I've started retraining after winter. Fortunately, it sounds like my case is unusual.
My chest is rather bony and about 44" around. Routine use when running causes the transmitter to bounce up and down. The strap and stitching dig into, then break the skin. Initially, it looked like an allergic reaction. However, experimentation showed that it's abrasion, not allergies.
The old HR100 chest strap worked much better. Polar did try to work with me on this and I commend them for their level of effort.

This rating is based solely on the fact that this is one of the few companies that does not specifically say what products work with their devices. Shame on me for not completing a thorough internet search that would have shown that other people have also fallen in the same trap. A search on Polar's site shows that Polar says to call Nokia and Nokia says to call Polar? I found a German language Polar site with an actual picture of the belt I need and the transmitter says "Polar for Nokia" and will be available in 2010. Why does Polar USA not simply say "available 2010?" Because the package was impossible to open without the use of scissors, the item is not returnable and I will attempt to sell it to someone who can use this with their Polar watch or with whatever "5kHz transmission technology" it works.
Features of Polar WearLink+ Coded Transmitter and Belt Set (Medium-XX-Large)

The Polar WearLink transmitter combines superior Polar technology with a new fabric design. The electrodes, which pick up the heart's signals, are engineered right into the fabric strap. The result is a superior fit for any individual body shape, providing revolutionary comfort and full freedom of movement. The transmitter's textile strap is removable and machine washable. Its clip-on mechanism ensures quick and easy wear, and the belt is easy to put on and take off.
Polar's coded technology ensures that the user picks up only their heart signal, and not the signal of another heart rate monitor nearby. With millions of HRMs in use today, there's a good chance that someone working out next to you may also have one on. Interference from any other HRM is now eliminated and an accurate signal is ensured.
