Prevention DS-1902PV Auto-Inflate Blood Pressure Monitor

Reviews of Prevention DS-1902PV Auto-Inflate Blood Pressure Monitor

1.) Terrific Product for the Home

I recently purchase this item for my own use as I was diagnosed with High Blood Pressure. It is well made, easy to set up and use. The readings are accurate and closely match those that I was getting in my doctor's office.
I like the speed of this model and it does not pump up way over my systolic pressure like the one in the store or like the nurse does at the doctor's office. It is really comfortable.
I take my pressure in the morning before breakfast and again in the evening after all the excitement of the day has wound down. I keep the morning and evening readings in Memory 1 and Memory 2. When you press the memory button the monitor automatically calculates the average so I don't have to keep a log and do any math. My doctor just wants to see what my average morning and evening values are so it makes it really easy when I go back for my check ups.
I have been a suscriber to Prevention magazine for several years and I am rally glad to see that they are now getting into products that I can use to take care of my health.

2.) Great monitor!

I recently purchased one of these and am very pleased with the device. The cuff has an extended range so you don't have to spend more money for a large cuff. It is also a narrow cuff so that it fits very nicely on the upper arm. The large cuff from my old monitor never fit well because it was also very wide.
What I really like about this monitor is that it measures while the cuff is inflating. It never goes more than a couple of mm pressure higher than my systolic before it stops and quickly deflates. It makes it VERY fast and it never squeezes my arm like me old one.

3.) Takes the reading quickly
Reviewed by: Bruce Michigan

I have used automatic blood pressure checkers that squeeze your arm and hold the pressure so long that your arm falls asleep and your fingers throb. The Prevention device is very fast; it takes maybe 15-20 seconds to pressurize, read, and then release the pressure. Also, it indicates an irregular heartbeat (I have PVCs that show up on this monitor). I use this monitor to check my BP every morning; I am very satisfied so far.

4.) An Excellent Blood Pressure Monitor!
Reviewed by: Ruth L. Brumme Southern California

The Prevention Bood Pressure Monitor was highly recommended and I have found that is correct. It is easy to use and very accurate, more so than wrist models. I took it to my doctor's office and it's reading compared favorably with the reading the doctor received with his manual method. The memory feature is very helpful in comparing present reading to previous ones. It is very easy to operate and the results are easy to read. I highly recommend it!

The machine arrived in excellent condition and on time. I have used it 15 or 20 times and it has functioned well.
I appreciate the larger cuff because it does not cause pain in my arm while inflated.
It has been evaluated by a Physician's Assistant who specializes in blood pressure testing and she gave it an excellent rating as to accuracy.

6.) Life Saver

I didn't feel any pain. I was a little short of breath and was exercising to get past it when I got this monitor. I learned that my resting heart rate was over 130 and my heartbeat irregular. As advised I sought the doctor who pushed me into a wheelchair and rolled to me directly to the hospital. The unit is a lifesaver.

Before you buy one of these monitors, which are well made and easy to use, check with your doctor. Mine GAVE me one of these monitors that she had received from the "Benicar" drug rep.

If you can't get one free, they are still worth the price Amazon is selling them for.

10.) Good performer

I have used the unit for about two weeks, with NiMH rechargable batteries installed, and it performs as advertised. There is, in my opinion, a design flaw: the Start/Stop button acts as the power on{off function, and is easily depressed at unwanted times, e.g. putting into or removing from the case. They could/should have included an AC adapter.

11.) BP Monitor Review
Reviewed by: Dickeypoo Bradenton, FL USA
Rating:
I have been very satisfied with the monitor. It is easy to use and seems to be quite accurate. I was disappointed to find when I opened the box that there were no instructions included. A quick phone call had them on the way. I was able to use it without the instructions but could not set the time, etc. All-in-all it is a quite satisfactory device.

12.) Average in every way
Reviewed by: Jerry Saperstein Evanston, IL USA

This product trades on the recognition value of its "Prevention" brand name. If you decide to purchase this unit, shop for it and find it on sale.

There is nothing special about this blood pressure device. It looks similar to and behave similarly to many of the other units you will see on the store shelf or in the catalog.

The design is generic and pleasant on the eye. The display is very readable and unlike some units includes a date and time function. The arm wrap is detachable which I consider a possible design defect in that the fitting for the pressure cuff can be incorrectly inserted which could lead to erroneous or no readings. On the other hand, the detachable cuff allows the use of larger or smaller cuffs for people with different sized arms.

The cuff itself has a very smooth inner surface which makes placement more of a chore than it has to be.

The overall design is a bit poor. The case does not zip open completely making storage of the unit a tad on the difficult side. You literally have to shove the base measurement unit and the pressure cuff into the snug opening. Pretty dumb. Also, the instruction manual which should be stored with the unit is too big to fit into the case. In my opinion, that is just plain dumb.

Overall, a 3-star rating - average - is all that it merits. As I said, if you decide on this unit, look for it on sale so you get real value for your money because it really isn't worth what most firms consider retail.

13.) Has One Serious Flaw
Reviewed by: Truthseeker Kansas City, MO, USA

The flaw is that although it advertises irregular heartbeat detection, and it does do that, **it does NOT record it into memory**. If one needs to manually write down which events have irregular heartbeats then what is the use of the memory function?

Irregular heartbeats are a health concern for me and the main reason I chose this monitor over others, such as Omron. When I discovered that it doesn't keep a record in memory of irregular heartbeats I almost sent it back. I can't conceive of a reason that something detected and displayed can not be stored into memory along with the other information like time, date, BP and Pulse rate. What were they thinking?

I was also disappointed that it did not come with the owner's manual or quick start quide. I was also going to return it for that issue, except that I found them online and copied the PDF file. Very sloppy packaging!

Another minor aggravation is that the clock cannot be reset without having to remove the batteries. That triggers the clock reset functions, and is the only way it can be triggered. That should be corrected.

Copying down the information stored in memory is also a bit of a pain, as each record is only displayed for a short time, and if one is not finished copying the record, say # 22 in bank 1, then you must press the memory key another 22 times to get it back onscreen. If you overshoot, you have to start all over again. There should be an easier way.

Otherwise I found the instrument to be accurate and useful.

I found this product to be inferior to my previous one. I was quite surprised that it did not include a plug in re-charging feature. Battery life is much too short for such a product. I wanted to return it immediately and the on-line information said that this product was "unreturnable." I had to go out and buy another and "lost" all the money I'd send for this product.

15.) Maybe mine was just a lemon...
Reviewed by: J. Ball CT

Both my wife and I have high blood pressure, which our doctor would like us to track at home. After checking out many brands and styles of automatic monitors, and based on the reviews here, I didn't hesitate to buy the Mark of Fitness, Inc monitor (Prevention edition). When I received it, there were two problems: First, there was no owner's manual inside. Since I kept getting an "err 2" message, I had no way of checking what that meant. (Amazon.com suggested I look online for a pdf version somewhere. Unfortunately, the Mark of Fitness' web site didn't have online manuals.) The second and more important problem with this product was that it was clearly very inaccurate. When I finally was able to get some readings, they were: 112/64, 106/60, 96/61, 106/62, 109/64, and 115/62. Oh, how I wish some of those WERE my readings! Maybe it was just my misfortune to get that one in 500 lemons with no owner's manual and who knows what else wrong with it, but unfortunately, I won't take a chance on trying another one. It's going back today.

16.) I returned mine
Reviewed by: Jean-Claude Balland Beaverton, OR United States
Rating:
I was very disapointed by this product. It promises the right set of features, but it fails to deliver.
1. The package contains no user manual. I looked for a web site everywhere on the package and the quick guide; I could not find it. Actually as I write this, the package sits on its side, and I finally discover the web site adress located under the box. But who keeps the box after a purchase?
2. The very brief Quick Start guide (a two-sided 4"x6" piece) does not say how to set the clock. Isn't it the first thing a user would like to do?
3. There is no on/off switch, and the START button is very sensitive. So when you put the monitor in its pouch in a bag, it is more than likely that the unit will start to inflate on its own.
4. My set of 4 AA batteries lasted less than a week! There is no power supply nor any indication on how to order one!
5. The readings were much higher than the doctor's unit.

So I returned my unit.
