RESPeRATE Blood Pressure Lowering Device

1.) UPDATE: Most important is whether you are willing to put in the effort required to make this work...

...and if you need some motivation, factor in long-term medication cost into your buying decision.

BOTTOM LINE: Buy this ONLY if you are willing to put in both the time and the effort required to see results. That translates into roughly an hour a week for at least a month--for the buy/keep decision--and 45 minutes a week indefinitely. Also, keep the receipt in case you find it isn't right for you, for whatever reason.

Other reviewers have accurately pointed out that using this device is, in effect, meditation. That's true. I've used meditation CDs--including one specifically on meditation through breathing. They were helpful. But in my experience, none of them have been as easy and as foolproof to use as this device.

BACKSTORY:
My blood pressure gradually crept up over the years, and the diagnosis of "labile hypertension" changed to simply "hypertension." Saw this device online, and decided to give it a try. It has made the difference between starting medication and not having to take one. TWO YEARS LATER, I've maintained the gains and then some. As a resulted I still don't require meds for hypertension--a diagosis my MD has dropped.

Yes, this IS pricey. But so was the non-generic medication my cardiologist was considering. I have prescription drug coverage, but copayments quickly add up, especially for non-generic. (NOTE: Many of the newer meds are not yet available as generics.) So, I bought the Resperate, knowing I could try it and return it if I didn't like it and/or it didn't have the desired effect.

But overall, I do like it--a lot. And it has had a beneficial effect on my blood pressure. After less than two weeks using this, at my next MD visit I learned that my systolic blood pressure (top number) had dropped 14 points, the diastolic blood pressure (bottom number) had dropped 3 points. Two years later, I now average 110/70.

When the Resperate arrived, I was a little overwhelmed, so I asked a techie person to walk me through the set up. Turns out it was a LOT easier than I'd anticipated.

The basic premise is that blood pressure can be changed by breathing more slowly and deeply. This little machine actually "analyzes" your breathing pattern in the here and now. It first "senses" where you are using feedback from the sensor on an elastic belt, then gives you immediate feedback (initially through the screen, then through the melody) about how to slow your breathing, breath by breath. The default time for a training session is 15 minutes. The goal, however, is to accumulate 45 minutes of EFFECTIVE breath training per WEEK. (Effective is defined as breathing fewer than 10 times per minute.) The manual states that while your breathing will return to a higher rate, the positive mpact on your sympathetic nervous system carries over.

Scheduling the use of the Resperate into my routine as part of bedtime preparation has worked best for me. Initially I used it every night to help establish its use as a habit. Using the Resperate is relaxing; I also find I sleep more deeply on the nights I use it.

I did try the different "melodies"--there are five to choose from. I like three. (One of them I found irritating, another was so-so.)

NOTE FOR TECHIE TYPES: There is a statistics function that can provide detailed info, but if more than one person uses the device, the stats would be meaningless. Two years later, the manufacturer (Intercure) now offers a slightly more expensive version--called RESP@RATE Duo--which incorporates two separate memory functions for each of two users. However, as another reviewer noted, that won't work for clinics or group settings; there, tracking statistical results would stilll need to be done with paper records, or using an Excel worksheet.

A word of caution for those with pets, small children or grandchildren: Don't leave this out, with its tempting cords and elastic belt! The manufacturer suggests stuffing the cords and belt into the device. I found this tiresome, since the cords tended to tangle. However, the headphones do store well on the device itself. A gallon size freezer bag is easier to use. This will keep those tempting cords away from inquisitive pets. Or just put it back into the box or store it in the drawer of your bedside table. (OCD can purchase a travel/carry case from Intercure.)

I bought the RESPeRATE as a preventative to a slightly elevated BP reading in January. It did exactly what is was supposed to do - it decreased my PB significantly (13 pts) within a few weeks. But the other effect I noticed was a general feeling of well-being and increased positive outlook on life. There is considerable evidence now that mindfulness training has positive temporary and possibly permanent effects on brain function (see http://psyphz.psych.wisc.edu/). Using the RESPeRATE seems to be having this effect for me as well. As a mental health professional, it is critical that my mind and body be in an optimal state so that my patients can achieve a similar state within themselves. Congratulations to InterCure for making such a terrific device.

I don't know if it works for everybody, but it certainly has for me, and I am happy to share this (entirely unsolicited) testimonial with others in the same boat.

After being in acute renal failure I was on 5 different anti-hypertensive meds to try and control my fluctuating BP, none of which was able to get it regulated. My doctor recommended trying the resperate and getting off the lotrel and using cozaar, which is renal friendly and has virtually no side effects. Within 4 weeks my systolic BP was in the 115 to 125 range instead of 165 to 185. I am so grateful for this machine. The musical tones make me feel as if I am in the company of angels, it is so relaxing. It has now been 8 weeks and my BP has been completely stable. It is FDA approved for use to lower BP. It works without any other changes in your normal routine. Update: August 2006, It has now been over a year of faithfully using the resperate. I did have to change from cozaar to atacand because of an elevated renin level but that was last Fall and my nephrologist is very pleased with the stability of my BP. Not only has this machine helped with my hypertension but I also get hardly any colds, which was always a problem for me. My doctor says it is because I am so relaxed using the resperate. I still highly recommend this product.

5.) Great product to reduce stress as well

I have been using Resperate for 2 weeks and when I use it my BP falls anywhere from 20-40 points. I use it 2-3 times each day faithfully. That is key to good success with Resperate. You must use it every day for best effects.
It also is great for reducing stress. I feel much better physically after using it.
Ask your MD if it is for you. You should use it as part of an overall program to reduce BP: lifestyle modification, diet, exercise, stopping smoking, etc... It should not be the only thing you use.
**** Here is a helpful hint. Make a recording of one of your sessions. That way if the machine breaks you can still do the treatments. You will need a few things to get a good recording. A line in connection to take from headphones out (on Resperate) to input on computer. You will also need a headphones line splitter (so you can hear the tones on one line while the other goes into the computer, and then recording software. I use audacity which is a free download [..]
The cables cost about 20 bucks, but it is worth it to have a back up copy of the recordings. Then when all is connected, just sit back and do a session of Resperate and record it on your computer. Then burn a cd and you have a copy should anything happen to your resperate unit.

Hope this helps!
For me it has been well worth the cost.

I have used the device for a little over 2 months now. You need to have patience, and not get frustrated/give up, because you won't see results overnight. My readings only started to improve recently. So, just stick with it. The instructions are easy to follow and straight forward. Having never done any relaxation techniques, I was a bit nervous with my first `session' as to what to expect. Nothing to worry about! The music does a nice job guiding your breathing to a slower rate, you hardly notice. And when done, there is nothing 'to come out of'. I am very much looking forward to my daily session. And: no side effects as with drugs!! It is definitely worth the money.

7.) This product works! But...

First of all let me start with the negative: I believe this product is over-priced, especially in order to reach the elderly and poor people. This is a product that can spread by word of mouth. You're not going to get everyone to buy this product at $300 and probably not for $200. I believe that other products like this will be out soon, because this product really works!
I was skeptical of this item and I told my doctor about it and he smirked at the product, another told me breathing really had nothing to do with my blood pressure. I am glad I didn't listen, but the price sort of held me back.

Pros: My average blood pressure was ranging from 150/81 to 160/90 on a regularly basis. I immediately saw a drop upon my first use. I was originally using the device 2-3 times a day, just to see if it worked. The second week of use my BP was averaging 140/90; Third week 133/85 and this week I have gotten readings below 120/80. I am going to the doctors this week and due a 5-day check from my doctor and after that schedule an appointment to discuss the item he smirked at earlier. Bottom line, I would strongly recommend buying this product. Buy it now if you can afford the price.

I think everyone with high BP should try this device, with the amount of money out there with the drug companies; this is a way for RESPERATE to come through the back door, but not at this price.

I purchased this device for a friend that had very high blood pressure that was out of control. At the time (4 months ago) he was taking 4 different pills twice a day and while the pills helped in lowering the blood pressure it was still way above what it needed to be and the readings weren't consistant.

After a month of usage his numbers started coming down, today 4 months after begining of usage he is down to half a pill a day, even his doctor who initially was a sceptic has become a beleiver and is recommending this to his patients. This device definetly works, I've read some of the negative reviews here and don't get it, its either they didn't use the device correctly as instructed or they are talking about another device completly. I have become an evangilist for this product and have one thing to say - If you have high blood pressure - GET THIS DEVICE, you won't be sorry, its a real way to get rid of all the medication you have been taking and a way to get your blood pressure down to where it should be naturally.

(I have never had a problem with the diastolic pressure but it has dropped as well).

And it is SO enjoyable. I have tried meditation and find it is difficult but 'resperating' is something I now treasure.

This is an excellent product that I've been using for 15 months. I use Resperate several times a day. My blood pressure was rising, typically reading around 135/90. Resperate alone brought that down to a normal level. Since then I've improved my exercise program, diet, and added dark chocolate drinks (that's pure cocoa and hot water). My normal blood pressure now is usually around 115/75.

Here's a prescription that can't hurt you. Use Resperate, stretch, watch your favorite comedy show while sipping a half a glass of red wine (or relaxing beverage of choice). Use Resperate and stretch again. In doing so I've seen my blood pressure drop to ridiculously low levels like 100/62.

Ok, here's the gottcha. I don't recommend ever letting your breathing rate drop below 4.5 breaths per minute (will vary per individual), especially right before bed (the manufacturer suggests never dropping below 5 BPM). I've experienced sleep apnea after doing so (which I've never experienced any other time). It's a temporary thing and only an annoyance, but easily avoided. If you do like to use Resperate right before bed, be sure to maintain a high enough breathing rate for you or work in 5 minutes of stretching or some light activity (even brushing your teeth) before you actually go to sleep. I've never heard of anyone else having this problem so I could be unique.

Several reviews I read, said that it helped with sleeping, as well as blood pressure reduction. That feature alone sold me on trying it. Often I wake up during the night and have difficulty getting back to sleep. On the second or third day I had the machine, I tried it just before going to bed. That relaxed me and it seems to work really well. I find that I now sleep soundly, and if I am awakened by the dog, I still get right back to sleep. Also I find I seem to have more dreams using the machine. It does drop my blood pressure right after use, but it is too early to tell if it will reduce it all the time. It takes 4 to 6 weeks of use for that. I use the machine for two 10 minute secessions each day, 4:30 pm and just before going to bed. The headset was defective when I received it, and Amazon customer service service has not answered my email asking if I could just return the headset. Resperate would not exchange it. I just bought another headset because I did not want to send back the machine. Also I sent an email to customer service saying that the online rebate form did not accept my email address or order number. I did receive an answer to call them or forward my email to a different customer depertment. When I called they had me fill out the online form again while they were on the phone, and again it was not accepted. So I was told to just mail it in. But if the online rebate does not recognize the order number, it makes me wonder if the mail-in rebate will go through. It is expensive, so that is a concern.

The directions say it takes 3 to 4 weeks to see a difference but mine was much quicker. I started by using it every day to get in to the habit but now am using it 3 times a week as suggested. My boyfriend's progress has been slower but it also brought his blood pressure down within the first week.

You have to be willing to put in the time or it will not work. But wouldn't you rather put in 45 minutes a week than go on medication? The other great thing about the Resperate is that it is very relaxing to use. It's like taking a little time out of the day to simply relax. I think it's great for anxiety too. This is amazing! So I've occasionally had doctors take my BP and tell me that it's borderline high. I'm 37, and I used to exercise very diligently but have been slacking somewhat over the past few years. Although I still try to stay in shape and stay healthy (bodyfat % used to be 7% but is currently 14%), I tend not to watch my diet at all. I don't watch my sodium consumption, I don't count calories or worry about fat content. I don't usually consume too much sugar, but I don't go out of my way to avoid it.

Well, I decided to get a home blood pressure cuff so I could keep track of my blood pressure and not have to listen to a doctor tell me my BP is borderline high when the only reason I'm at the clinic is because I'm in pain or serious discomfort.

I took the monitor out of the box, read the instructions and checked my BP and it was 142/80. Stage 1 hypertension according to the systolic reading. Maybe taking a reading 10 minutes after eating two entrees wasn't a good idea. Anyway, I decided to Google "Lowering your blood pressure" and it sent me to a site that recommended several steps to lower my blood pressure. All the usual ones like exercise, diet, taking BP medications if they are prescribed, and then it mentioned RESPeRATE and how this non-surgical device has been proven to reduce blood pressure. I thought, "Really?", so I followed the link to Amazon to check it out.

After reading about the way the device is supposed to work, I changed my seating position/posture (was slouched on the couch) and altered my breathing pattern while continuing to read all the user reviews, taking slow measured breaths. That was until I came across the review that mentioned that it isn't recommended to slow your breathing rate to 4 breaths per minute or less. I measured the rate I had slowed my breathing to and realized it was about 3.5 bpm, so I altered it a little till it hovered around 5 as I continued reading the reviews.

After reading through the reviews for about 15-20 minutes, I decided to check my BP with the monitor again. 117/79!!! Wow, after just ~20 minutes. So altering your breathing patterns really DOES make a difference!

What can I say, the actual practice seems to yield real results. If you need this device to help you focus and do it, so be it.

Combined with exercise and low sodium diet, I believe that someday I'll get off the bp meds. I've already begun to question the need for the medicine with this thing. Some days however my bp shoots up and I don't know why. I have noticed my bp goes down in the afternoons and that overall since using this device, my bp in the afternoons has gone down. My bp before using this was 140/85 and lately it's been 132/78. Some mornings my bp has gone down to 119/72, but that's after exercise, honest diet, and breathing exercises the day before. 15 min to start is not hard to do. The "guiding" tones are easy to follow and overall I feel relaxed after each session. A couple times I actually fell asleep...which is not recommended and when your breathing goes off the path, the device wakes you up and tells you how to get back on track. It's all good. If you are spending $$ on medicines, I recommend you buy it. Maybe you can lower your dose or get off it entirely by using this thing. The retail cost of my bp w/o insurance is $190 per 90-day supply. This resperate device could eventually be quite a cheap investment with a great ROI.

Anyway, I've been averaging probably 125/85 up to 135/100, depending on my stress level. My doctor has had me tracking my BP for the last month. Before going on medication, I wanted to try this. Tonight, I took my BP before trying it... 125/85. After using Resperate for 15 minutes, I felt very relaxed. Walked back into the living room and sat down, then took my BP and was surprised to see it at 107/75.

I just checked it now, 1.5 hours later and it's 118/82. So, we'll see what the effect is after a few weeks of repeated use. But on Day 1, I'm impressed.

But, there is one thing you should all be aware of:
If you take your blood pressure in the morning it is the highest it will be all day. You body raises your pressure in the morning to give you a jump start, otherwise you would stay in bed all day. That is how my specialist explained it to me.
Think about it in the morning when you get up, feel how your heart seems to be racing, that is your wake up then it takes some time to lower and even out. So take your pressure after noon sometime and see if that helps.
Do it preferably at the same time each day. I like 2:30 P.M.
Good health to you all.

46.) Using RESPeRATE to prevent migraines
Reviewed by: Val Golan, Ph.D. NJ

My daughter Morgane, who is now 8 years old, has been suffering from delibitating migraines since infancy (yes, there is such a thing, unfortunately).
The symptoms are very impressive, she usually drops to the floor and starts vomiting within a few minutes. She cannot move or open her eyes. It makes her very anxious and we noticed that she hyperventilates when she thinks she is going to "get dizzy". We tried to make her breathe slowly and calm down, to no avail. Morgane's doctor told us that breathing slowly and practicing biofeedback were the best non-drug practices against migraines, and we try to avoid giving Morgane medication as she is so young. So I thought of using RESPeRATE as my Dad has high-blood pressure and I knew it worked on the breathing pattern.

Morgane immediately understood how to use the device, it was so easy and even fun for her. It relaxes her and gives her the strength to know she can do something about her migraines. Her breathing pattern has reduced considerably and so far, she has not had another migraine attack for about 6 months. She used to have them every two months.

I have purchased another device for my best friend, a long time migraine sufferer. The way I see it, it is such a painful condition that anything that helps without harm is a blessing.

It DOES take "getting acquainted" to learn how to use this. You must actually read the manual to gather it's operation. Once you get oriented, it is pleasant-and effective-when one is RECEPTIVE to what the device is supposed to do. If an individual has issues with labored breathing for any reason, it will be a challenge to use (albeit a very soothing one). You are to breathe along with the preprogrammed music of your choosing (there are a handful of melodies), and the music gets slower and slower. The change of tempo is influenced by the feedback the belt around your waist gives the machine. You will be challenged to breathe REALLY deep and REALLY slow. I mean, like, master yoga practitioner slow!!! Challenging. Doable, but challenging. If you do it and keep with these exercises in breathing, you WILL be better for it. I want the reader to clearly understand that although this machine is very very soothing to use, it is not to be mistaken for a luxury item or a toy relative to addressing your health. It takes time-daily!-and receptivity to its relaxing powers to obtain tangible results. The RESPeRATE will teach you the good HABIT of healthy breathing while lowering your blood pressure if you actually use it.

Big expense, but you'll spend the same on a year of copays for your prescription drug. It qualifies as a reimbursable expenditure if you have a flexible spending account. If it's about the end of the year and you still have funds in your FSA, go for it!

Even if you don't have high blood pressure, it's excellent for relaxation right before bed, or just plain stress management. I would imagine that even children over the age of six or so would like using one.

A very vigorous physical workout has a larger and longer lasting effect. According to their publications the device worked for about 60% of their subjects. I myself see no long term effect yet. My breathing rate is already slow. With this device I bring it to about 2.5 breaths per minute. Because the device displays breaths per minute instead of seconds per breath, it gets unresponsive at slow breathing rates, leaving me to choose between breathing faster or having the tones drift in and out of phase. Also the belt responds only to expansion at one spot while a breath may entail a moving locus of expansion. On the other hand it is easy to use and sometimes pleasantly relaxing. I found that meditation drops blood pressure a bit less than the RespeRate and increases pulse rate while RespeRate does not. I plan to keep using it.

I recently reviewed the medical literature and there are several proven therapies (other than prescription medications) for treatment of hypertension. This machine is one of those therapies.

The most effective therapy for lowering blood pressure without medication is walking (working up to 15 to 20 miles a week...less than 10 miles a week has little effect). For more on the new minimum recommendations about walking, visit the new government sponsored food pyramid and carefull read the recommendations about exercise...the new guidelines differ greatly from the old "20 or 30 minutes, 2 or 3 times a week (a recipe for obesity and hypertension): http://www.mypyramid.gov.

In addition to walking, proven therapies (greatly reduced in effectiveness compared with walking) include a vegetarian diet as well as several supplements (garlic and CoQ-10 are two of several) that also may benefit.

Working in synergy, a dramatic and effective lowering of blood pressure can be obtained. Use this machine in conjunction with a daily walk (with your doctor's permission) of 3 miles (7 days a week) and with a diet as recommended in "The Abs Diet" and it would be difficult to keep from lowering your blood pressure.

I do have patients who were helped; those who were not helped made no other real changes. Use this machine without any other changes in lifestyle, and I doubt that you will see a worthwile result.

The device is very relaxing to use. I recommend that you walk during the day and use this device as an afternoon refreshment for energy or before bedtime to improve sleep (as well as help for blood pressure). But, don't waste your money if you're not willing to walk at least 15 miles a week.

I have not used this machine but will base my opinion on the use of a blood pressure monitor that I purchased when my blood pressure suddenly shot up to 170/100. I think this was due to food poisoning. Anyway my blood pressure had always been pretty low, approximately 105/65 when I was in my 20s to 30s and about 125 to 135 once I passed 45. After the food poisoning incident, I purchased a blood pressure monitor from Wal-mart to watch my blood pressure. One day, when I sat down to take my blood pressure, I had a really exhausting day. I was pretty tired and decided to relax myself by taking a long slow deep breath in through my stomach and an equal amount of time exiting the breath through my stomach. I then did the reading and my blood pressure was 106/64. Was this a coincidence or was it because I had taken the deep breath? I did one long deep breath several times again within the week just before I took my blood pressure and each time my pressure was lower than normal. I started doing deep breathing once or twice a day when I wasn't using the monitor (2 to 3 long deep breaths in through my stomach and out through my stomach) after which I always felt more relaxed.

My blood pressure has stabilized to approximately 115/70, I think this is a direct result of the deep breathing exercises that I do during the day. The RESPeRATE blood pressure monitor seems to be a good machine and after reading the reviews, it sounds like a meditation or biofeedback machine. I think the RESPeRATE blood pressure monitor is an excellent machine for someone that needs to be taught slow deep breathing exercises through the stomach, but if you can't afford this machine or find it difficult to sit for 15 minutes a day, try an inexpensive blood pressure monitor and practice on that. Same concept. If you're breathing right, the monitor will reflect it. If you're excited or agitated, or your blood pressure and heart rate speeds up whenever a doctor takes your pressure "White Coat Syndrome," the RESPeRATE machine may help you to remain calm in all situations.

Negativity apart, it is actually a great invention. It does a good job in sensing your breathing pattern and forces you to stick to a pattern for 15 minutes after which it shuts off by itself. It guides you through a pattern with ascending and descending soothing musical notes. It is quite relaxing and you will find yourself yawning by the end of the 15 minute session. There are a lot of good reviews here on Resperate. A number of them sound so good they could have been "placed" here by the manufacturer.

Look, I have no doubt that Resperate will make a reduction happen for many people who use it, because the idea is sound. It's based on good science-that meditation reduces blood pressure readings.

But let's take a look at what you get here. This is basically a $30 Chinese CD player being sold with a built in "tune" for $300. It is NOT a quality product. I used it for two months, got a small reduction in my blood pressure readings. But the first unit I received was defective within a week, and the second one looked like it was going to have the same problems. Physically, it is not made well. It's chintzy. And when I spend $300 for an electronic device, MAN that thing had better be cool, and really made well. In this case, the little plastic piece that has the digital readout on it came off, the earphone jack had to be held in only a certain way in order to work, and the cheazy little monitor thing that goes around your chest is actually hard-wired right into the case, which is crazy because it is prone to shorting out. So, in short, you'd have to be really nutty to keep this thing after the 30 day evaluation because its "self-destruct" mode starts kicking in about then. The company has a great $100 product here, but they put an extra $200 into the retail price so that they could promote the heck out of it. Even the headphones that come with it are so cheaply made that they fall apart faster than the units that they give away in airline seats.

What you get with Resperate is something that you could have for free just by sitting in a chair and slowing down your breathing. What you DON'T get is quality. This is a device equivalent to what you'd get for $25 or $30 in a WalMart if you were buying some kind of electronic gadget. Cheazy and without any similarity to something worth $300. And for those who believe that the blood pressure result is what you are paying for, and not the unit itself, you can get EXACTLY the same results by spending $20 on a meditation/breathing CD and listening to it an hour or two a week.

This was a real waste of money, I started using it everyday in June '08, and kept using it all summer without a drop in my blood pressure AT ALL.
I read it had a one month return policy, but they recommended using it for at least 6 weeks....Go figure. I E-mailed their customer support and NEVER heard from them. So between the failure to lower my blood pressure and no response from Resperate..I think my blood pressure might have actually gone up a little.

Expensive...and after three months of daily use I can't say it has helped my blood pressure.

I record my blood pressure every morning at the same time...after getting up from nights sleep.

I use exercise equipment for 45 minutes after stretching exercises. Then breakfast and 15 minutes on Resperate Devise.

My blood pressure hasn't changed significently in the last six months and I continue to take blood pressure medicine.

The Resperate Device was used for the first six weeks just before bedtime - change in schedule hasn't changed blood pressure measurments to any significant extent.

I continue to use the device because of the fortune spent on it but wouldn't consider buying it again.

I bought this item at a local drugstore for $300 and used it every day for 60 days. It did not change my blood pressure at all.

I tried contacting the company (phone and email) and they never answered the phone or my emails.

Since I paid for it with American Express, I was able to return it to the place of purchase for a refund.

While some reviewers appear to enjoy using this product and get good results, I wanted to balance these positive reviews with my own experience.

In my case, I tried using this for a couple of weeks, but the 15 minutes that you are supposed to use it came to seem like an eternity of boredom. I would sometimes check the time thinking that 15 minutes were up, but find I was only 3 minutes into the routine. You listen to a very repetitive tone sequence, which I found soon grated on my nerves. I doubt that it would help my blood pressure once I found it so annoying. It would probably be much better to just relax and listen to music that I enjoyed. In fact, the clinical studies of this device showed that listening to music (the control condition) accomplished a substantial fraction of the reduction of using this device.

So, this does seem to work for some, but you can probably judge your own personality as to whether you could enjoy listening to a repetitive tone sequence 3 times a week for the rest of your life.

I am giving this only 1 star as it cost a lot to find out this didn't work for me and there was no return policy after one month.

I guess this product may work a bit if your hypertension is caused by too rapid, too shallow breathing otherwise forget about it. The machine prompts you to inhale and exhale to musical tones until your breath rate reaches 10 breaths per second then it lowers your breath rate to the point that if you follow the cues your breath rate will get down to about 4 1/2 breaths per minute. The problem with this is the manual suggests not letting your rate fall below 5 breaths per minute so then why doesn't it stabilize around 6 breaths per minute? When I contacted customer service I NEVER got a response. This is a sure sign of a company selling a ripoff product. I've had it for a few months and it mostly had no effect on my blood pressure but what was worse is that on a few occasions I took my blood pressure before using the Resperate and after where my blood pressure was actually HIGHER afte using the product.

I wish that I had read the reviews here at Amazon before I spent the money on a Resperate Machine.

This machine is the biggest waste of money I've seen in a long time. The company would not give me the free shipping promised in the newspaper ad so I ordered from Amazon.

I complained about the limited 30-day warranty but was told it would ONLY take 3 - 4 weeks to see any results. Since I have many problems with most BP meds, I was dreaming that this might actually help!

My spouse & I tried it for a month with NO results & left on vacation [no time to send it back]. When we got back we tried it for another month -- my BP went down slightly, his actually went UP.

I asked the company about that and also about whether we had to use this thing for ever. I never got a reply.

I repeated the questions on their forum -- still no answers.

I found this exercise exhausting, frustrating, & boring because the stupid thing does NOT breathe WITH me [now my BP is UP too], and I cannot possibly breathe as it directs me [panting like a dog!]. My husband complains about the same thing.

I would advise people not to waste their money.

RESPeRATE Blood Pressure Lowering Device
I bought this product 3 years ago, and was then diagnosed with breast cancer so I could not begin to use it on a regular basis. I just began using it 4 weeks ago and the sensor broke. I called the company to ask about a repair and they said they do not repair anything - you have to send the machine back for a new one for which they charge you $[...] (original cost was $[...] for 4 weeks of use - you do the math). All they needed to do was replace the sensor, but why do that when they force you into buying a new machine. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT.

Features of RESPeRATE Blood Pressure Lowering Device

Introducing RESPeRATE, the interactive breathing device used by thousands of men and woman nationwide to gain control over high blood pressure. Used for just 15 minutes a few times a week, RESPeRATE delivers a significant all-day blood pressure reduction.

The Power to Lower Blood Pressure
RESPeRATE is a portable, computerized electronic device that guides you through sessions of interactive, therapeutic breathing powerful enough to lower blood pressure.

Proven in Seven Clinical Trials
Step 1: The respiration sensor monitors your breathing.

Step 2: The RESPeRATE computerized unit composes a personalized melody with prolonged inhale and exhale guiding tones.

Step 3: Simply listen to the melody through the headphones and synchronize your breathing.

By prolonging the exhalation tone RESPeRATE guides you to slow your breathing and reach the "therapeutic zone" of less than 10 breaths per minute.

Using a breathing sensor, RESPeRATE automatically analyzes your individual breathing pattern and creates a personalized melody composed of two distinct inhale and exhale guiding tones, delivered through comfortable earphones.

Simply listen to the melody through the headphones and synchronize your breathing to the tones. By prolonging the exhalation tone RESPeRATE guides you to slow your breathing and reach the "therapeutic zone" of less than 10 breaths per minute.

The physiological result? The muscles surrounding the small blood vessels in your body dilate, and relax. Blood is allowed to flow more freely, and pressure is directly, significantly lowered.

Breathing with RESPeRATE makes the difference
Scientific evidence has shown that structured therapeutic breathing, if performed without an effort or particular concentration, can significantly lower your blood pressure. However, these effortless therapeutic breathing sessions are difficult to perform on your own without years of training or continuous, individualized coaching. That is why RESPeRATE was developed.

To deliver effortless therapeutic breathing without any prior training, RESPeRATE utilizes a patented "Interactive Respiratory Pacing" technology, which ingeniously takes advantage of the body's natural tendency to follow external rhythms.

Three Easy Steps
Within 3 to 4 weeks of use, a significant, all day reduction in blood pressure can be achieved.
And while your breathing returns to normal after each session with RESPeRATE, the beneficial impact on your blood pressure is cumulative. Bottom line: with regular use of RESPeRATE, measurable, sustained reduction in blood pressure is achieved.

Who Should Use RESPeRATE
Whether you are already taking anti-hypertension medication or still trying to lower blood pressure with diet and exercise, RESPeRATE might just be the tool you need.

Seven clinical trials repeatedly found RESPeRATE to be safe and effective for people with high blood pressure, either medicated or unmedicated, male or female, younger and older.

One particular study, published in American Journal of Hypertension, even found that RESPeRATE delivered significant blood pressure reductions for people who had uncontrolled blood pressure despite taking three or more medications at maximum dosage.
