I waited until the heart rate monitors that didn't require a chest strap were affordable to buy one (they were $300 at one point, and CLUNKY). This one is tiny (relative to other models, i.e. the polar) and I'm very impressed. It takes about 2 -3 seconds to measure your heart rate, but it's very accurate. I like the calorie counting feature, too, although as the computer never asks you your weight it is probably making the calorie - burning calculaltion for a "standard" weight, i.e. 150 pounds. You have to make the adjustment (if you weigh less) yourself.
Surprisingly easy to use, too! I am hopeless with these things but this one is intuitive. I daresay I didn't even bother with the manual (does anyone?)
Great product, and a very good price for what you get!

I bought this watch because it had a wireless heart monitor. Although it doesn't monitor your heart constantly (you have to stop and recheck your pulse rate from time to time) it is still good while exercising to see if your heart rate is up. The calorie counter isn't all that accurate because it is based on your heart rate, which fluctuates constantly. But all in all, I really like this watch. It has a pretty blue backlight which is great for checking the time at night. I wear the watch all the time, not just for exercising. While I don't use all of the functions that come with the watch, it really has some neat ones to use. I have a very small wrist and it is the only watch I could find of this type that would fit nicely. I recommend it highly.

I received this last week and haven't taken it off since. I have used it while running and while exercising in my living room. The quality seems good, the fit is perfect for me and the instructions are clear. I love the calorie counter and the HRM seems extremely accurate. I also purchased a blood pressure wrist monitor, so I have measured my HR with the watch and then the blood pressure cuff and the readings always match or are extremely close.

The only downfall is that you do have to be almost not moving for it to pick up your HR. I wish I didn't have to stop to have this feature work, especially when running.

Other than that minor detail-I love it!

This product was surprisingly accurate, quick and easy to use. I compared it to the heart rate monitor at the hospital's cardiac rehab lab and it was within 1 or 2 heart beats both at rest and in full run mode. Much more comfortable for women than a chest strap monitor.

6.) Very Pleased with this Chest-Strapless Heart Rate Monitor

I asked for and received this heart monitor for Christmas after reading the positive reviews on Amazon.com. I haven't been disappointed and have been very happy with the performance and ease of use of the heart rate monitor.

There is a little programming that has to be done initially, but the instructions were fairly easy to follow, even for someone not especially technically inclined, like me. Once done, to get your heart rate, you press the two silver buttons positioned - one of which is at the top of the face and other one at the bottom - until the numbers appear, which is just about 5-10 seconds. Also displayed is the percentage of your target heart rate that number represents.

I knew I wouldn't use a heart rate monitor if I had to wear a chest strap, so I was thrilled to find this one existed - and that it is so accurate. It's been very interesting to learn what my heart rate is with my various exercise DVD's. Working up a sweat doesn't always mean your heart rate is elevating! While I want to get a good workout, I also felt I needed to ensure I wasn't exceeding my target heart rate, as I'm not a youngster.

The watch itself is a light blue with a plastic band. I have very small wrists (about the only thing small on me), and the watch has enough holes that I can wear it with two remaining. The face is large enough to have displays that are large enough to be easily read, but not so large that it's too big for someone with a small wrist to wear. That said, I doubt I'd wear this as a watch, as it's a larger size than I wear my (fashion) watches.

Overall, I'm very happy with the monitor. The true test of satisfaction is if you'd buy something again - and the answer is a definite yes.

Whenever I see someone at the gym readjusting the chest strap on their heart rate monitor I am so happy I bought this one instead. It works great and was so easy to go right out of the package. Some people have said that they have to stop their workout to get a reading but I have not found that to be the case at all for myself. The reading seems to be accurate when tested against other monitors and the size is just right even for a small boned person like myself.

I wanted a quick way to measure my heart rate while walking for exercise - this does the job well. I like that it is accurate while not having to wear an uncomfortable chest strap. I can easily wear this whenever I go walking (even for a lunchtime walk at work) to keep my heart rate in the target zone (the watch sets a target zone and flashes with an L or H if your heart rate is too low or high). I have never had a problem with the watch not measuring my heart rate by pressing two fingers on the buttons - it has worked every time. I take my heart rate while walking fast - no need to stop.

I also use the timer to keep track of the length of my walk. I have not used the calorie calculator, so I cannot assess that feature.

The reason I considered this watch in the first place is that it is fairly small and fits small wrists. My wrist is 5.75" and there are still two slots left to adjust for even smaller wrists. It is lightweight and the plastic strap is fairly flexible. The face (15/16" glass, 1.5" across from left edge to right edge) is a nice size, still a little bulky, but it is a sport watch. The blue color is nice - not too girly like pink would be, but more stylish than black or grey.

Update 11/8/08 - I still really like this watch. I wore it on a hiking vacation in October and it worked great most of the time. I did have some issues with the watch not taking my heart rate during some longer cold weather hikes (approx 30 degF and hiking for several hours). I'm not sure if the problems were because of the cold air temp or that my skin/fingers were colder than normal or that the air was dry and there was not good moist skin contact. Once I warmed up my hands and breathed warm air on the back of the watch where it contacted my wrist, I could get it to take a reading some of the time. I do maintain my 5 star rating since this watch performs well for most of my use.

I read all these reviews and was on the fence about getting this. I simply wanted to monitor my heart rate during pretty strenuous workouts. I looked at things from $40 to $190. As I read the reviews, I was nearly talked out of getting it, even though I had already put it in my cart. Then I thought, I am not a triathlete. I just want to run or work out every day and make sure that overall, I'm in a certain training zone. This seems like it would do that... and for $40. So I did get it. It is great! I cannot imagine what it is not doing that people want it to do. When you hold the buttons down for heart rate, it does it within like 1 or 2 seconds.. while I'm jumping around or standing still, running, etc.. it just takes a few seconds. It is not the work-out stopping 5 to 7 seconds I read about at all. And even if it does take 4 or 5 seconds, you can still do this while running or whatever. Do people really have this much trouble reaching their wrist? It needs you to touch it with the other hand because it is not getting your pulse from your wrist. It is doing a little EKG thing, so you have to make the circuit by wearing the watch (the back is a metal plate which is touching your arm) and your other hand touches the metal pieces on top. After a few seconds the circuit is made and there's your heart rate. Simple and easy and fast. AND on top of that, a chronometer, a stopwatch, calorie counter (now on this, truly there is no way it can be very accurate. I think it makes the determination on your age and sex alone, so if I weigh 300 lbs vs. 100 lbs, this will be very different. Still, I like seeing the numbers for some reason??) and dual time function. The ONLY thing I could be happier with is the color. It looks fine but it's a heart rate monitor... I had no intention of wearing it except when I was working out, so I didn't care about the color. Now, that I like it so much, I wish it were black so I could wear it all the time.

After reading the many reviews I decided on this watch because I wanted a heart monitor that would work anywhere and for all activities with no chest strap and that fits my small wrist. Yes you do have to touch the buttons to get a read but that is just what I wanted. The read is very accurate and is better than trying to find and count my pulse. Yes I do have to stop the activity briefly to get a read but I think its because I m not coordinated enough to walk fast and push buttons and look down so you may be able to if your coordinated enough. (I would fall on my face). It only takes a few seconds and I don't think your heart slows that much in that short of time. I really like the fact that it has a back light feature and the size is small for a heart monitor watch. I like the color too. Very happy with the purchase.

It is in fact a watch with time, date, etc. Then you click a button if you want it to be a heart monitor. I'm hoping to get my heart rate up on stairs, etc. at work during the day and I'll be able to see my results. I was worried the strap might be too small for my wrist since I have large bones but it fits fine. I think this watch would fit an female's wrist.
I also bought an inexpensive strap monitor--the Omron--to wear on walks and on my exercise machine because I like the continuous reading of my heart rate like I have used in the past.

I received this item very quickly (in six days, shipped to Australia!) and have found it easy to set up and use as both watch and heart rate monitor. The manual is clear and concise; the heart rate function is easy to access and gives an accurate result when compared with a simple pulse count.

I've bought this for health reasons so will be wearing it all the time. The monitor is about twice as thick as a normal cheap digital watch, but it is quite attractive/comfortable and I think it will pass as a watch when I wear it around other people. I have not tested it running, but it's easy to use while walking.

I, for one, found it awkward to use two fingers to make the connection as suggested in the manual and use my thumb and index finger instead.

I just received the watch and like it very much. It took me a minute out of the box to figure out I had to press the start button to get going---duh. The directions only mention that once, and not at the very beginning, however this is more of a reflection on me since I haven't had any other digital watches.
The HR monitor worked fine for me quite quickly. In the beginning I wasn't getting a reading every time, and sometimes it still takes closer to 8 than 3 seconds. But as I'm getting accustomed to using the flat pads of my fingers, it's working faster and more consistently. It just takes a bit of practice.
It is very accurate according to the HR monitor on my treadmill, and it is fun to check my HR during activities away from the treadmill, such as my real resting pulse (lying down), when I'm up, when I'm moving about, and so on.
It's unrealistic to expect a continuous reading out of a product like this, and it's not suitable for someone who just has to know what's going on while they're running hard outside and doesn't want to pause or slow down to check their HR. I didn't want anything complicated, and I couldn't bear the idea of wearing a strap after ascertaining my general HR the first few times on the treadmill at various levels of exertion.
By the way, if you find it awkward to use your index and middle fingers to press the two buttons, it worked for me using my thumb and middle finger.

If I would have done my research beforehand I wouldn't have been surprised at this, I know.

Anyway, now that I have it I am pretty pleased with the product.

The pros of this product are as follows;

I really like not having to wear a chest strap transmitter.

I like that it is slightly "girlier" looking; I have the blue model, and I like it better than my very basic, big clunky Polar model.

I like the calorie counter.

It is as accurate as my Polar model with the chest strap; I used both watches during my last workout on my elliptical machine, and everytime I took my heart rate with this watch it was usually within 2 BPM of my Polar Watch. At the most, a few times the difference between the watches was 4 BPM.

The only drawback to this product in my opinion as I've mentioned before is the fact that it does not automatically and continuously take your heart rate. Once I get used to that I think I'll really enjoy this watch.

It is a pretty neat gadget since it combines a watch, a calorie counter, a heart rate monitor, and a chronometer. It also has a light, which makes it nice. I bought it mainly for the heart rate monitor feature and am pretty happy with it overall. It reads heart rate fairly accurately; my only complaint is that you can not be moving very fast in order to get an accruate reading. If you are running at a moderate/fast pace on a treadmill it has a hard time picking up a signal and sometimes it displays nothing, sometimes the reading is unreasonably low (i.e. 65bpm when I know I have to be in the 150s or 160s). But if you slow down to a walk where you have better control over how you position your fingers over the sensors, you are most likely to get an accurate reading.

Overall I'm happy with it and will use it for a long time.

It does not work well when running or jogging though unless you can be very steady - it does work fine on my elliptical machine because I'm not bouncing as much.

One downside: I called the 800 customer service number to ask how the calorie meter does it's calculations (you enter age and sex but not weight) and it kept forwarding me to a voice mailbox for a single person. I left a message and never heard back. There is no information available online or in the user's manual about it. Until I find out I'm not going to believe it. I just got this watch today. The heart rate monitor is definitely accurate. I tested it compared to timing my pulse with a stopwatch. While you do need to hold down the two buttons to take your heart rate, it only takes a few seconds, so it's not a big deal. It would be nice if it continuously monitored your heart rate, but I would still take this over having to wear a chest strap. One thing I wasn't thrilled with was how bulky the watch is. I was under the impression that it was a small watch that looks more like a normal digital watch, but it's a lot bigger than I thought (see the photos I posted). I do have a very small wrist, so it might not look so big on everyone though. So bottom line...it seems to serve the purpose and it's relatively inexpensive for a heart rate monitor, but if you're expecting this watch to look like a regular digital watch, you should know that it is on the bulky side. That being said, I think that's the case for all heart rate monitor watches -- at least all of the ones I read reviews for before buying this one.

Sometimes blowing on your fingers helps the readout if it is colder outside or your fingers are cold. The only question I have about the watch is if the calories burned section/screen has a decimal in the readout. I get very high calories burned for moderate exertion. I love the blue backlit feature for nighttime use. I would definitely buy this watch again or as a gift.

My Reebok Fitwatch was a great product for about 9 months until the screen stopped working properly and now it only displays gibberish. However, for 50 dollars, I think 9 months was still a good value. The watch is better for running than for biking because on a bike, it can be difficult to continue riding while pressing down the two buttons with one hand. I usually had to stop to take my heart rate while biking, but for running, it's perfect.

After reading several of the reviews, I was on the fence about buying this watch. I've used mine 3 or 4 times now (during spin class, running and on the elliptical machine so far) and I really like it! It's really cute & comfortable, has a lot of neat features (like the calorie counter) and so far the heart rate readings have been pretty accurate. I haven't had any trouble reaching my wrist like some people mentioned and haven't really had to stop or slow down what I'm doing to take a reading. I'm sure the chest strap models are more accurate and convenient as far as giving you a continuous reading, but if you're no Olympic athlete-in-training and just want something to give you a general idea of how hard you're working, this is a great watch!

The watch also only counts calories burned for a 15 hour period, but that is ok for me because I can get a good idea of the calories I burn during waking hours only. I love this watch and it is an excellent alternative to the body bug which I was not willing to spend over 200 dollars on. Overall, I'm really happy with the functions on this watch/HR Monitor. I have found that the band is getting dirty over time, but this hasn't bothered me too much, it is just that darkening you get on a lot of plastic wristbands.

Sometimes, when exercising, I do have trouble getting the HR monitor to work quickly. I am not an elite athlete and I'm pretty casual about technology in my training so it hasn't bothered me much but it probably is something to consider. If you want constant feedback, this isn't the product for you. Most days, the watch is spot on with what other monitors in the gym are telling me. Occasionally, it seems to not work properly. I believe the calorie counter does over estimate - so that is something else to be aware of if accurate calorie estimates are important to you.

Other things I like that I wasn't expecting from this watch: You have a 'dual' function where you can keep track of a second time zone - helpful if you have loved ones overseas/ There is a timer that counts down from a goal time and a timer that you can set to time from zero onwards to see how long you've been on task/ When displaying and setting a time for the alarm, the clock also displays the current time/ the main display shows a calendar as well as the time.

106.) Decent, but does NOT take continuous measurements
Reviewed by: Marjorie Chardin

Overall, this is a decent little watch that does the trick without needing a cumbersome chest belt. However, there are two big drawbacks that aren't entirely clear from the product description. First, this will not continuously take your pulse -- it only measures your heart rate each time you press the buttons. Second, this downside further impacts the calorie counter. Once activated, your calories burned hinges entirely on your last calculated heart rate and so does not account for fluctuations in activity unless you continuously check your heart rate (not ideal if jogging quickly on a treadmill; riding a "real" bike; or using an elliptical where both arms are needed). Now going back and re-reading the description, I see "hints" of these downsides -- but as a first time buyer, I didn't put it all together until after I put this watch to use. But then again, if I got all this watch offered AND had the ability to continuously monitor pulse and calories, the product probably wouldn't be so modestly priced.

Even though I did not expect this Reebok Fitwatch 10S Strapless Heart Rate Monitor Watch (Blue) to do a whole lot, especially not for thirty-something dollars, I expected it to last a lot longer than two months.

Pros: 1) It gives a good ballpark of my heart rate; 2) it's water-resistant so I can wear it when swimming; 3) you can program it to give you your target heart range; 4) it's not important to me but it was nice to have a calorie-burning function.

Cons: 1) it's rather bulky- it's a problem when I wear long-sleeved clothes, and I have to take it off whenever I get on the computer; 2) the number of calories burned is based on the last reading you did, so if your last heart rate measurement was, say, 150 bpm, the calorie-burning feature bases its numbers on the 150 bpm, not your current rate; 3) the backlight came on and stayed on.

Overall, it did what I wanted it to do, which was to measure my heart rate and is water-resistant. It would have been nice if it did it for a lot longer than two months. I am getting an exchange, so I'll see if the new one does the same thing.

I would not recommend this watch to anyone who exercises to really push up their heart rate.

I am very unhappy with this watch. I bought it specifically for the calorie counter and heart rate monitor. The heart rate monitor works sometimes when I am not working out and NEVER when I am working out. When I check the heart rate it will just kick back and show me what time it is. Yeah it says to wet your fingers and try again, lower your wrist below your heart, wait 3 minutes and try again...bla bla bla. When you're at your peak you want to know where your heart rate is. Not 3 minutes later after you are cooling down. I know that I burn at least 1,300-1,500 calories during my back to back spin/strength training class and my watch states that I burn less than 1 calorie per minute?? REALLY?? Come on!! I would really like my money back. I bought it because it was inexpensive and had decent reviews, but I guess you get what you pay for sometimes?? My spin instructor bought the same watch from Amazon and she is having the same exact issues. Guess it's not just me....

I was attracted to this watch because of the lack of chest strap...but there's a reason REAL heart rate monitors have a chest strap- because they WORK. This monitor works fine when you're standing still. But if you actually want to use it to work out, think again. It's really annoying to have to press and hold down the sensors with two fingers to get a read and it barely reads when you're moving. By the time it reads, you've already stopped your work out. Also, there's no way for it to do a calorie count because it's not monitoring your heart rate during your work out. It must "guess" based on the 1 or 2 readings you're able to get at some point during your work out...far from accurate.
Trust me, go for the strap. I'm sure you get used to it after a day or two. Wish me luck on returning this one.

We ended up returning this product to Amazon, and it couldn't have been easier. Amazon took it back quickly and with no problems, that was really the only bright spot in this pruchase. We may have just had a defective one, but we did end up going with a watch from Polar, and I give that one 5/5 stars. It was much easier to use with absolutely no problems.

I was very disappointed by the performance of this watch and ended up returning it. The heart rate function simply would not work consistently. Most of the time, I would press the button and nothing would happen. When I did get a reading it would be wildly different than the reading on my stationary bike (which I consider to be quite accurate.) Others seemed to have similar problems with this watch and I should have heeded their advice! On a positive note, Amazon was great about letting me return it and I got a complete refund. Buy this watch with extreme caution!

Watch has great fit and finish. The watch measures heart rate well when you are NOT exercising hard, but is not consistent when you are moving quickly. Obviously that is the time when I want it to work... Additionally, it will not read heart rate wit dry skin underneath the watch. If you are not sweating, you must moisten the skin under the watch to make good contact. This is most inconvenient. Overall, the idea is great, but not carried out well. I selected this watch because the rubber chest strap of my previous heart rate monitor caused chaffing. I thought this monitor would be a great solution, but it did not work unless I stopped exercising.

I could get the monitor to work most of the time when walking or standing still, but even a light jog caused too much jostling to to get a reading. I found it difficult to maintain pace on a run with one hand reaching across my body to apply consistent pressure to the buttons on the other wrist long enough to get a reading. Usually, after an attempt to take a heart rate while exercing, it beeped and just displayed the time. I had to slow down to a walking pace to get my heart rate to display. It was frustrating that the monitor I purchased to help me maximize my workout was actually causing me to slow down to try to use it. The bottom line is that I could never get a reading when I was running or doing aerobics, so the monitor was useless to me.

Features of Reebok Fitwatch 10S Strapless Heart Rate Monitor Watch (Blue)

This Reebok strapless heart rate monitor is one of the smallest on the market and allows the user to get accurate heart rate without having to use a chest belt.

Specifically made for women, with its lightweight and slender design, this all-in-one heart rate monitor and sports watch by Reebok uses a patented method called "pulse technology" to measure the electrical pulses sent out by your heart each time it beats. Of course, the amazing part is that it works by finger touch rather than the cumbersome chest strap used by most other heart monitors. Within four seconds of touching the sensors on the watch, you can get not only an accurate heart rate reading, but also the number of calories burned during your workout.

The monitor has a programmable heart rate zone with audible and visual alarms to alert you when you get out of zone, plus a settable alarm if you have a maximum rate you should not exceed. Made from durable plastic and fully water-resistant, the device also features regular watch functions, plus a 100-hour stopwatch and countdown timer. It comes with a complete walking and exercise guide and one-year warranty.

About Reebok
Reebok's United Kingdom-based ancestor company was founded for one of the best reasons possible: athletes wanted to run faster. So, in the 1890s, Joseph William Foster made some of the first known running shoes with spikes in them. By 1895, he was in business making shoes by hand for top runners; and before long his fledgling company, J.W. Foster and Sons, developed an international clientele of distinguished athletes. In 1958, two of the founder's grandsons started a companion company that came to be known as Reebok, named for an African gazelle.
