Tanita BF679W Duo Scale Plus Body Fat Monitor with Body Water

Reviews of Tanita BF679W Duo Scale Plus Body Fat Monitor with Body Water

1.) Good Value Choice
Reviewed by: Gaz Rendar Chicago, IL USA
Rating:
I previously owned the Tanita 2001 body fat scale. When that one died, I upgraded to the 679W Duo model and have been very pleased.

FEATURES
The scale measures weight, body fat %, and body water %. The scale has 4 metal pads that will send a low-level electrical current through your body. People with higher muscle content will allow the electrical current to traverse their bodies with less resistance than a Mr. McFatty person. The scale measures this resistance and calculates your body fat and hydration levels from it. I have found the weight, body fat, and body water measurements to be highly accurate when compared to a couple other scales that I've stepped on recently.

EASE OF USE
There are three buttons on the face of the scale right below the display that allow you to input your sex, age, and height. It's all very simple to make selections and input these data. Along with these three face buttons are three toe buttons at the bottom of the scale. You can store personal info for two users (the sex, height, and age info) into two of the buttons. Then everyday when you want your measurements, if you're User 1, just touch Toe Button 1 or if you're User 2, touch Toe Button 2 and step on the scale. This way you do not have to input all that info every single time (like you need to with the Tanita 2001). This is a great feature. Some other brands or other Tanita models offer 2-10 User Memory, but they often do not have corresponding toe buttons, which means you still have to bend your fat self down and hit the user button with your finger first. Believe me, after 3 days of that, you're not going to want to do that anymore.

The third Toe Button is a Weight Toe Button that you can hit if you just want the scale to act as a normal scale. Finally, you can bend down and use your fingers to input age, height, and sex as a one-time use for a guest.

DURABILITY
I've had my scale for 9 months now and it's always worked fine with no problems. It takes 4 AA batteries, and I'm still using the ones that came included with the scale despite my nearly daily use. This is much better battery life than the Tanita 2001 model, which seemed to only last 4 months or so. You will only need to occasionally wipe off the metal footpads to keep them clean for accurate readings. No big deal.

PROBLEMS/MISCONCEPTIONS
Honestly, for about $50, there are no problems with this unit. It's a great buy. However, I read some negative reviews here from confused people. First, there are warnings all over the box and on the site that tell you not to use this product if you have a pacemaker or internal electronic device that's keeping you alive. This is obviously because it measures your body fat by sending an electrical current through your body. C'mon, think people. And this isn't just for the BF679W, it's for all "commercial" body fat scales. Second, reviewers talk about the consistency of the body fat measurements. Your body fat can fluctuate 1 or 2 percent over the course of the day with these types of electrical conductance measurements based on where your body is currently holding water. If you always take your reading at the same time each night (right before you goto bed is ideal), you'll typically find consistent readings within 0.5% - 1%. If you measure your body fat right after you wake up, there will be all kinds of water centrally concentrated in your bladder that will mess up the readings. Again, this happens with all commercial body fat scales. Finally, it's possible the BF679W tells you that you have 17% body fat and really you have 15% body fat based on thorough measurements from your doctor's office. I still think the number is going to be very close to your real body fat percentage. However, this scale will still be able to do a reliable, accurate job informing you when you've lost or gained an extra percent or two of body fat over the course of several weeks. So while your absolute body fat numbers could be slightly off with the BF679W, your relative gains and losses will still be highly quantifiable with this unit.

Overall, this is a outstanding, durable scale that delivers dependable readings. I strongly recommend it and would encourage people who are thinking of buying the Tanita 2001 or any other body fat scale that does not have toe buttons to purchase this model instead; it's worth it.

2.) Keeping Us Honest
Reviewed by: kjenfan United States

As a person who struggles with her weight, I've come to the decision that there are three things every weight conscious person needs to own: a good weight scale, a pedometer, and a well designed diet journal. (You can check out my other reviews for my recommendations on those). But why those items? Because otherwise, we have a rather flawed tendency to be dishonest with ourselves as to what we really weigh, how much exercise we really did, and how much we really eat. Case in point: the Tanita BF679W. Now, here's a well designed, attractive scale that seems flawlessly accurate. It's easy to use, and stores personal information for two people and 'guests' [who can enter their information in on a third monitor]. You simply enter your age and your height and the scale thereafter comes up with not only a true, accurate (yes, folks, I'm afraid I weighed ten pounds more than I was wishing I did) weight, but also the percentage of body fat and your body's water level. Most of us know why weight and body fat percentage are important, but how many of know what's imortant about your body's water level? Anyway, it's all nicely explained inside the owner's manual. So why stick with an old, unreliable scale that keeps you fooling yourself? Get smart and get the Tanita. I've no doubt that you'll be as pleased with its accuracy as I am. And at least you won't be fooling yourself anymore.

I did my research when I was buying this scale and everywhere I looked I kept coming back to this one. Its very accurate and easy to use. Great product I'm very happy with it.

4.) The most accurate bathroom scale I have ever found
Reviewed by: Benyang Tang Pasadena, CA United States

I have owned many bathroom scales. This Tanita model is the most accurate, to 0.2 pound. I verified it with a post scale. You step on it, take a measure, and step on it with a bottle of mouth wash weighing 1 pound; you get an increase of exact 1 pound.

The most amazing thing is: It can weigh objects of a few lbs. The other digital scales I have give you a 0 reading if you put an object of just a few pounds.

5.) easy to use and appears to be accurate

Although I was initially depressed because this unit showed that I weighed about 6 pounds more than I had thought, I found it to be accurate compared to my old analog scales we had had for years. If you follow the instructions, it's easy to program and gives you body fat percentage and body water content, based upon your height, weight, gender and age. All good. I recommend this product.

6.) Very accurate scale!
Reviewed by: E.D. NYC

On very other scale I've owned, I could manipulate the number: if I step on it with my right foot first, I'll weigh a pound less. Move the scale to a different floorboard: five pounds gone! Every time I try the Tanita, I get the same weight all the time, and that's to two-tenths of a pound! It also has options to weigh in kilograms or stone/pounds. I've found a slight variation with the body fat percentage: about a half percent variance. I can live with that! The scale is easy to use, and stores measurements for two people (others can use the scale in "Guest" mode). Be sure to read the instructions though: amazon reviews have said the Tanita is inaccurate with wet feet: in the instructions, it says specifically to only weigh yourself with dry feet. Also, this scale is not good for people with pacemakers (due to a mild current sent through the body to determine body fat). This is by far the best scale I've owned, and a great value!

7.) Works great.

Works well. Has more features than most scales we looked at. Weight, fat and water. Great for the two of us. Only stores for two people. Mostly to store your Age/Height/Gender. Than lets you know if you're in range for your age/gender/height. And lets you know if your are above, or below the range for your group. Does have a visitor feature that will only read weight. Easy to use.

9.) No complaints whatsoever

I bought this scale from Amazon around 3-4 years ago and I have absolutely no complaints whatsoever. It's a pleasure to own & use. I bought my father a nice "health" scale, but I don't like it nearly as much as this one. I haven't had to change the batteries yet so have no idea what kind of batteries this scale even uses. The numbers are nice and large and very easy to read without our eyeglasses. I have to weigh at least twice in succession each morning before eating or drinking because the scale is so accurate it reflects the tiniest fluctuations that my fat or water (?) goes through before it settles down right after I use the bathroom. I used to get a kick out of seeing my body fat percentage right after my weight; but that got old quickly and so now I just use the "guest" button where nothing is programmed, just like a regular scale. Incidentally, there is a switch underneath the scale that allows you to choose pounds, kilograms or another combination. My nurse friend was so impressed with it, she bought herself an identical scale. And my son & his wife liked it so much they requested and received one from her bridal registry. I think this scale was worth the xtra bucks. BTW, I believe when I purchased the scale it was sold through Amazon directly.

If you don't actually want an honest answer about your weight, don't buy this, but if you want the God's honest truth than this is for you. I'm not entirely convinced that the body fat and water weight calculations are 100% correct, there's a lot of variables and the average consumer has no way to test the validity of it, but as far as weight measurements go this scale is marvelous.

It's easy to use, as long as you follow the directions (you have to remember to stand on it as directed, and make sure your feet are clean!). I don't know how eaxctly accurate the body fat and body water percentages are, but they seem to be in the correct range, and are very consistant as well. The only real drawback to this product is that it's pretty ugly, but I think with it's consistant results, and reasonable price, it's a great deal. I am very glad that I purchased it.

A good scale is essential to weight management. We traveled through Alaska for three months. I used FitDay to control my calorie intake and used the Tanita scales to monitor my weight. First time I had ever lost weight during a trip. I started at a little over 250 pounds. Now am 223. Shooting for 180. The Tanita scale matches what the "good" scale at my doctor's office shows. It really helps to know you are getting an accurate reading. Took the scale with us during our motorhome trip to alaska and used it every day. Well, this one was highly rated by most reviewers for accuracy & they are right. This scale is very accurate in determing a person's mass (sorry, I was a Physics major too) and confirmed at her Weight Watchers' weighings. I think the most that my weight has fluctuated within a minute's time was maybe half a pound, but usually 2/10th of a lb. (I've got in the habit of measuring myself at least 3 times in a row)

This scale is also much quieter. I measure my weight and body fat in the morning and my wife is still asleep. This also beeps indicating when to step on and another when it displays your body fat %, but it is not annoying at all (like the Taylor).

i quickly have learnt not to take too much notice of the bodyfat % and water%. There is too much variation, even if you get on and off 6 times in a row, the variation is unacceptable. Anyway, it is better to judge bodyfat by waist circumference (or belt notch), and your simple appearance in a mirror.

However, I am a bit skeptical about results. Both my wife and I are fairly lean folks (the lucky gene). I fall under the normal range (15%). However, she consistently registers at a very low percentage rate (at 7%) - which neither she nor I believe.

Excellent scale- ever since I bought it, I've been losing weight since I can accurately tell how much I weigh. It's a MUST for weight loss. I weighed 176 the day I got it, I'm at 157 right now.

As for the water percentage, it's worthless- as long as you're over 50% (for a male), your fine. It's related to the body fat %. The body fat % fluctuates too much to be that great. It's a good rough estimate- but I go from 16-19% depending on when I weigh myself. I find that I'm 16% when I follow the recommended advice (don't eat for 2 hours and then weight yourself), but that's definitely too low in my opinion. I still got a small beer belly. 19% seems more accurate and I get that after I eat. But the body fat percentage has definitely gone down since I lost weight, so like I said -it's a good estimate, but don't worry about 3% fluctuations.

I think the key with this scale is to note your lowest weight (in the morning when you get up, just do the weigh only option). That way if that weight goes down, you know you lost weight! And it's amazing how many pounds you gain right after your eat (clothes weight about 2-5 pounds depending on jeans/pajamas,etc.)

Reliability or consistency in measurement is probably the most important factor when comparing home bathroom scales. The Tanita BF679W is a reliable scale. If one weighs with these scales and then reweighs a short time later, the results are the same or very similar. I have no basis for evaluating the accuracy of the scales other than to note that they tend to underweigh you by a few pounds when compared to professional scales in doctors' offices.

In addition to weight, you get a reading on percentages of body fat and total body water. Other reviews have suggested that these readings may not be accurate, but they are at least useful for observing the amount and direction of change for any given individual, particularly if records are kept. There is provision for storage and review of the data for two people for immediate comparison with previous readings.

The scales are relatively convenient and easy to use. The digital readouts are large enough to be seen. If weight only is desired, tapping a button on the base of the scales makes that possible. The only improvement I would suggest would be to increase the length of time the readouts are shown.

I did a dumbbell test with this thing using 30, 35, and 40 lb dumbbells; both by themselves and with me holding them as I stood on the scale. This was to test both how accurate it was, and if that accuracy varied by the range of weight it was measuring.

It was never off by more than .4lbs, and since my dumbbells might be off by that much, that tells me this is a very accurate scale. Day to day it will vary by just .2 lbs depending on how I stand on it, so very good for tracking gradual progress.

Now as for the bf% monitor, that's almost useless. It is off by ~4-6% compared to the naval circumference method that I use, and while that doesn't sound like much, it has remained at the same bf% level despite the fact that I've lost 14 pounds since I got it. So, as far as tracking gradual bf% progression, it's less useful than a tape measure and a calculator.

So I'd give it 5 stars as a scale, but took away two for making us pay for a feature that doesn't work (for me anyway).

Reviewed by: Jason P. Boggs
Rating:
This little scale works well from a pound-for-pound point of view. However, as far as determining your "actual" body fat percentage...I just don't buy it. It says that the scale sends an electrical charge through your heal to help calculate your body fat yet it also asks for other criteria such as your age, height and gender. If you've ever been on one of those scales at GNC that "supposedly" measures your lean body mass then you know that those scales ask the same questions without the offer of an electrical charge shooting through your heal. If you change any of these criteria on this Tanita scale...the body fat percentage can change drastically. Also, I conducted a little experiment of my own to test the validity of this scales body fat determining ability.

I am a 6', 39 year old, 220 male. My initial body fat percentage using this criteria with the Tanita scale was anywhere from 27% to 32% depending on my water content. However, I've been a weight lifter for years and have quite a bit of muscle and a large frame, but...Ok...I can deal with 27 to 32...maybe I'm still a little chunky and maybe I need to lose a few pounds so I'll give that to the Tanita scale. But, during my little test I positioned myself between the counters in my kitchen and stepped on the scale. While on the scale I held myself up between the counters to where only 170 lbs were shown on the scale. Let me tell you...that was no easy feat because you have to keep yourself steady for at least a couple of seconds while holding that weight for the scale to be able to "grab" the data and perform the calculations.

What I was amazed to see is that while I was still "actually" 220 lbs at 27% to 30% body fat, the absence of that extra 50 lbs caused the body fat percentage to drop quite drastically to 18%! This really made me question the relevance of the electrical heal charge as well as determine that the scale was obviously relying much more heavily on the other data to determine the body fat percentage. In my opinion the electrical charge doesn't have too much to do with the calculations. If you think I'm wrong visit one of the scales at GNC and see if they don't ask you for the same information and then see if the results from the GNC scale is close to the Tanita scale. What's that old saying..."the proof is in the pudding"?

So...there you have it! My advice is if you want to measure your body fat; get yourself a pair of calipers or go somewhere where a professional can measure it for you.

I can stand on it once, get a reading, stand on it again 2 minutes later and have gained 1.5 lbs. So I think to myself, maybe it's my body water...but that number hardly ever changes! As far as the fat monitor goes, I don't trust it and didn't really think it would change that much, but that number fluctuates too. For some reason I don't think I can have a body mass of 20 one minute and 18 two minutes later. Another note, when I move the scale to a different part of my bathroom floor I can lose up to 5 lbs! current weight and body fat readings to the previous readings.

Why You Should Monitor Body Water and Fat Percentage
If you're like most people, you're not drinking enough water. If you wait until you feel thirsty, your body is already suffering from the effects of mild dehydration. You continually lose water during the day through sweat, urine and breathing. The amount varies due to several reasons, including your physical activity level, illness, medications, poor nutrition, or even climatic conditions. Monitoring your body water percentage allows you to quickly compensate if your levels are low, allowing your body to function more efficiently. Having the right amount of water in your body will not only make you feel healthier, but you'll also reduce your risk of developing serious health problems in the longer term.

High body fat levels can reduce your endurance and have been linked to heart disease cancer and diabetes. Tanita's body composition analyzers monitor your body fat and body water levels with Bioelectric Impedance Analysis, or BIA, the same advanced technology used by doctors. Foot pads send a low-level electrical signal. Then BIA measures the resistance to this signal as it travels through the body.

The Tanita BF679W is calibrated for standard adults and children and stores data for 2 people and measures body fat in increments of 0.5 percentage points. This scale also features a guest mode, allowing you to use the unit without losing information already assigned to the personal keys. The scale's large, easy-to-read 2.25-inch, 2-line LCD shows weight and body fat simultaneously, and instantly compares these readings to healthy ranges based on the user's age and gender. Simply supply your gender, age, height and weight into the memory, step on the scale, and the monitor does the rest.
