1.) Excellent heart rate monitor!

4-30-2010 Update: Had an issue with irregular heart rate readings after six weeks of use. Called the Timex support center and reached a very nice woman. She suggested replacing the battery in the chest strap since there's no way to know how long the unit I purchased had been sitting on the shelf. Even offered to send a new chest strap if the battery replacement didn't fix the issue. Fortunately, it did.

The more I use this, the better I like it.

I used Polar F6 heart rate monitors for four years. The Timex IronMan Race Trainer is superior in several ways. It has more features. It is more comfortable to wear. And most importantly, the heart rate readings are much more accurate and consistent.

Takes a little time to set it up and learn how to use it - and it's worth it. The print in the manual that comes with the product is small, so I recommend downloading and printing the manual from the Timex website.

All in all, this is an excellent product and a good value.

Thus far, I have only used it for running, but it definitely does the job. I plan on biking with it on and any other cardio-based exercises in the future to make sure I'm not working too heavily or lightly.
The heart monitor chest strap works great for me. Once adjusted correctly, I can't feel it while I'm running and it isn't noticeable, even under a thin shirt.
The watch looks cool and isn't heavy or restraining, so I have no problem wearing it anytime (and trust me, I have never been a watch person). I have worn it while running across my college campus in the pouring rain and I was comforted that I could check the time without grabbing my cell phone and giving it water damage.
All in all, a great product and exactly what I needed and wanted.


3.) Excellent Upgrade from Polar

This was a replacement for my Polar F7. It beats all of my expectations. I'm very pleased with the features provided for the price and quality. I've used it on several multi-sport events with no hassles whatsoever. Besides from the basic features (HR: MAX & AVG, CAL, etc ...) the LAP & Recovery functions are very useful. And lets not forget that the batteries are "user replaceable" ... a big plus.

I've always used Ironman watches for training in the past but never the haeart monitor. I have polar heart monitors I used for cycling... this will replace my polar watch. I love all the classic Ironman features combined witht he heart monitor features! A+

6.) What a wonderful piece of equipment

I purchased this item about one week after I got out of the hospital due to severe health issues. It was recommended by my doctor that I get such a device. After researching the many different types of products on the market with all of their "bells and whistles", I came to the deduction that this model would suit me just fine.

This particular model has many different modes in which you can set to your particular needs. The buttons and display are large and easily accessable. I have set it to my needs and it has just been a joy to work with. First with anything that you buy I must recommend that you read and understand the instruction book fullly. Doing this will greatly improve the use of this product for you, rather than it just being a glorified watch.

Some people who have purchased this product have apparently had problems with the device not picking up the signal from the transmitter. I would wonder if they read the directions fully for one and two this possible problem is easily fixed with putting a bit of moisture on the transmitter before wearing it so that it can more easily read your heart rate and send it to the watch. Initially I had one instance with this, but to date have yet to have another. As with any electronic device it will fail at some point, this is a given. Timex has been building a great product for years and has changed with the times to offer products that do more than just tell time.

I paid about $120 and for the price it is a great value. I would recommend this product to anyone who would need/want it. Thank you.

I bought this to replace the omrion HRM I had purchased last year here on Amazon. This watch had all the bells and whistles I wanted to continue tracking my running and general fitness. It is a great watch for everything I use it for. I also use a few online tracking websites that let me enter my information from the watch right after I am done working out.

I researched several different watches before finally choosing this one. I liked the features, price and reviews. Previously, I had only used heart rate monitoring during my workouts on an elliptical machine. I thought it would be nice to have heart rate information while running. It was a great decision. I find that I run harder than I used to because the watch keeps me honest. I love that it saves the last 10 workouts; it allows me to easily compare workouts and try to improve my statistics. I even use it when working out on a treadmill or elliptical because I can keep my statistics in one place. The display is great; large and easy to read. It gives you choices on display layout that are handy. It only took a couple of minutes to setup and the steps were easy. I haven't had any issues with the HRM function. (I do wet my t-shirt underneath the sensor to ensure good readings.) All in all a great watch!

After five years my Polar HRM was spent, the buttons fell off the watch sides from overuse and the chest strap battery said farewell. After looking high, low and everywhere in between I came across this model and bought.

Past workout date storage is a great thing, too many times I would forget to download the info and lose it once I started a new workout.

The Interval timer makes the Galloway run/walk marathon training seamless.

The only thing I don't receive from this unit that I got from Polar is the % of calories as fat-I can live without it.

Yes as others have stated in their reviews there is a learning curve, well isn't life?

In summation, its a good choice- buy.

10.) Has all that you need

The watch is great, it has all you need for your monitored training. The 12 workout memory is enough for two or three sessions so you don't have to worry about losing your workout data before sending it to your coach. The only thing I would have liked to be able to do that I can't is to set all the workout zones manually, but that's minor.

11.) Easy to use heart beat rate monitor

It's very easy to use. If you just want to see and monitor your heart bit rate, without any alarm, limit etc, this things is very simple to use.

Going further takes some reading of the manual; setting of zone 1-5, or manual limit, alarm, weigh etc.

Wearing this does improve your work out in terms of;
- you can pace your work out more methodically
- you have measurable target for your work out
- barring some hiccups (mentioned below), you can review your work out
- the above normally can be done on tread mill machine only. you get benefit of "measures" tread mill while doing your work out on the read
- overall this gives better motivation on each of your work out.


Draw back;
- I learnt that once in a while during the exercise, communication between sensor and the watch got disconnected. The low limit alarm buzzed off bpm <90 in the midst of my heavy workout (or else I must have been dead :). This in spite of sensor properly moisturized and sweat. After a while the bpm count will come back to where it should.
- hence when this happens the "review" mode will not reflect the actual work out.
- label prints on the watch is too small. you have to read manual to guess what's printed there.



12.) Triathlon name is misnomer - but good monitor otherwise

The watch has "Triathlon" below the Ironman label, and the manual states it is a triathlon training tool. However, this monitor will not work while swimming. It is an excellent tool for cycling and running, and the review mode is very helpful in recording workout information. I called Timex when the heart rate monitor failed to function in the pool after re-reading the manual to see if the problem could be pilot error. Instead, Timex warranty personnel told me the watch did not work while swimming and was not intended to and there was nothing they could do about the problem. (Not very courteous in providing that information as well.) He also added none of the monitors will work in water. This is incorrect as Polar monitors work quite well while swimming. At the advertised price on Amazon, this is a very good value, and if you don't need it for swimming, it is very good. I bought the monitor specifically for cycling and swimming, and I still considered keeping it because the other features of the watch are excellent.
